In the area of movies and television, what is the distinction between a producer and an executive producer?

The executive producer is the person who finds the funds to get the project made, by finding investors.
The producer is involved with the actual production aka making of the movie, selecting the script; coordinating writing, directing, and editing; and arranging financing(which can overlap with the executive producer aka E.P.)

A producer can be likened to a “manager” of a firm, whereas an executive producer is like the “top executive” of a corporation. The executive producer hires the producer, then the producer hires the people who have the talents and skills that are right for the project. Both are involved in the financial aspect of the film.
