When kids send letters where do they go?

Kids send letters to “Santa” to “The President”, “The Mayor”  to “Miss USA” to “The Pope” , “The Easter Bunny” and such.

Where does the post office deliver such letters with just a title on the letter such as President, Santa, Miss America or something like that?

Where do all those letters go? Who reads them?

Update:

Do they all go to a huge building in Chicago called the Dead Letter Office where they sit for eternity?

Such letters are invariably written at the instigation of the parents.   They are sent either to the FBI or the Child Protection Services, depending on the content.

They go to a building in Wyoming where they are turned into a delicious soup. The postal orders there then eat the soup

You have to put a address on there

To a PO Box and they are thrown in the trash.

I believe letters to Santa have some sort of "address" that wind up somewhere with volunteers who write back (I think). As for the president/mayor/Pope and other actual humans, most have people who filter general mail for them like celebrities. Other make believe characters like the Easter Bunny, etc; not sure, I would imagine the post office has protocols (probably destruction) for those.

If the person actually exists the letter would probably get to them if in the US. A letter to the Pope would probably be returned since it would not have enough postage. For someone that does not exist some organizations have agreements with the post office to answer them.
