Is Elgin IL a suburb or a City?

    I lived in Elgin. It is a good hours drive from Chicago with some traffic. It has never been considered a suburb of Chicago. It way too far away. 

    It is considered a city. The 8th largest city in IL.

    Elgin is a city 35 miles from Chicago.

    100 years ago, it was a small town on the Fox River, completely unrelated to Chicago.  With the growth of population and urban sprawl, it is sometimes called a suburb.  Take your pick.
