youtube, if you find one music that you really like, youtube algorithm will know what you want, and give you similar great music.

but never EVER let the trend decide what you listen, you have a bad taste is you do that

Don't listen to the radio. Look for it for yourself on the internet. There is A LOT of golden nuggets to be found out there if you just know where to dig...

In my opinion, the best way to discover new music is to use a variety of sources. Here are some sources I use, have used, and would use if I had more free time:

Sirius XM stations (Two of my favorites are The Verge and Alt Nation.)

FM radio stations (My favorites are "alternative" and hard rock stations.)

Music Choice TV channels (My favorites for new music are Alternative, Adult Alternative, Rock, and Indie.)

YouTube - scrolling down through the recommended videos; also checking out recommended videos on the home page when first logging in

Google "bands similar to [band/singer you like]" or "music similar to [band/singer you like]." You can also go directly to websites such as music-map and lastfm.

I believe there is a place in iTunes where you can select a genre and get recommended bands/singers.

Recommendations from other people. Websites like Yahoo Answers and Reddit are a couple possible options for this.

Wikipedia lists and other pages. A couple examples: "list of alternative rock artists" and "list of post-punk revival bands"

Checking out the music of artists who were influenced by artists you like; sometimes this can be found on an artist's Wikipedia page. For example, if you go to the Wikipedia page for Stevie Nicks and click on "Legacy" in the table of contents, it discusses several singers/musicians/bands who were influenced by her.

    Bandcamp

    Soundcloud

Checking out the lineup of bands/singers at festivals

Looking up concert venues and checking out the bands/singers who have concerts there

A couple times I've discovered singers/bands when they were opening acts at concerts I attended
