It was a metaphor to show that He is the only way to eternal life.

There's only one way for sheep to get into the sheepfold, and that is through the door.  The shepherd used to sleep in the doorway so wild dogs couldn't get into the fold and slaughter the sheep.  Jesus is our way into the reward of the righteous.  Anyone who climbs in over the wall is an enemy and a thief.

I AM the door.  Yes, Jesus called himself the door.  Just as a door keeps people inside safe, Jesus keeps his people safe when they dwell in him.

The door of the sheep FOLD - the shelter to which the sheep typically retired, during less than perfect weather.

In those days, sheep were gathered into a pen for safety at night and the good Shepherd {NOT ShepArd} would lay down in the narrow entrance to guard them, acting like a door. He said that those who came before Him did not enter the proper way into the pen, but climbed over the walls and were thieves and robbers, plundering the flock. Yet now Christ had come, the sheep recognize Him alone.

But a door opens both ways, and Jesus allows those who belong to Him by faith (His 'sheep') to go out and safely find good pasture and water. In those days the good Shepherd walked in front of the flock, to lead them to pasture and water. They recognized his voice and followed him. Jesus called Himself "the good Shepherd who lays down his life for the sheep" John 10:11. And so He did. His sheep know that, and also that He was resurrected to continue leading them.

Source(s): All of John 10:1-18 needs to be read to grasp the meaning.

Jesus Christ is the Door into our hearts.  The sheep hear His voice and we follow Him and He gives us eternal life and we shall never perish

We do not hear the voice of any strangers.  Jesus has already told us "He is the WAY, the TRUTH and the LIFE and no man comes unto the Father but by or through Him" (John 14:6).  In the same way, nobody can get to the sheep but through Christ, because He is the Door. to the sheep.

Be anxious for nothing but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known unto God and the peace of God which passes all understanding will keep your hearts and mind THROUGH CHRIST JESUS (Philippians 4:)   How?  Christ is the Door to the sheep. (John 10)

Nobody can come into the sheepfold except through Christ the Door. The lock to open the door of our hearts to Christ is on the INSIDE.  Jesus Christ stands at the door of our hearts, and Christ stands at the door knocking. if any man hears His voice and opens up the door, He will come into them and will sup with them and them with He. (Revelation 3:20).

We are only reconciled unto the Father through Christ.  So Jesus Christ is the DOOR.

Sheep follow the shepard at any cost. They will follow him off a cliff. The faithful followers of Christ are his sheep. The only way to Heaven is through Christ. He is the door. Because of His sacrifice for all, he becomes the advocate with the Father and determines who will enter in.

In ancient Israel a Shepard would lead his sheep into a fenced in area (the fence most likely made of stones). The Shepard would literally lay down at the opening of the gate and sleep there. He became a human gate at the opening

“Jesus is both the gate and the shepherd at the same time; he guards and protects his sheep from danger, and he provides for their nourishment”
