buy a racket that is not the cheapest, or demo one from a pro shop. Spend $30-$50 for a 1hr lesson with a pro at a local country club or ask around for someone who gives lessons. Learn the basics such as the proper way to hit a serve, where to stand during a point, how to hold the racket properly. A wonderful strategy I had was finding the closet college and asking the coach if any current players needed to make some cash. They are normally very good, cheap, and can provide good insight.
