Can't get dogwood and hosta seeds to germinate.?

I bought a bunch of cheap seeds off eBay. I planted many and they germinate well. But I can't get a single Dogwood (white flowering) or Hosta (Kabuki) seed to germinate. I tried planting in my starters, chiting in some paper towel, nothing happens. The hosta seeds soften but dont germ and the dogwood seeds dont even soften. I keep they're environment moist but not dripping and between 68F and 73F degrees. Any help?

Some seed have to go through a cool season before they become viable.

You would do better to go to a local nursery and purchase a small dogwood. There could be a thousand reasons the seed you purchased aren't germinating.

As for the hosta, getting divisions from a friend or by some. They are cheap enough. The seed most likely came from hybridized plants and will never do anything.

We planted some hosta seed from seed saved from our plants last year. They took about six weeks to germinate, I had just abou given up on them but they are starting to grow. One issue with Hostas is that they almost never grow from seeds true to the original plant, but that can be an adventure in itself, seeing what surprises will pop out of the soil. The dogwood seeds may need a cold period or might even need to have the seed coat nicked for them to germinate. See the reference below for more information.
