Why do I have arrhythmia after holding my breath?

I have noticed that after holding my breath, my heart rate is increased, but a coule of seconds after the increase, it suddenly pauses for up to a second, and then generally is slightly arrhythmic for the next 30 seconds. Is this normal? I have searched the internet and couldn't find anything.

Thanks.

Update:

Thanks for the answer Michelle. I understand that bit, I am really asking why there would be a long pause suddenly (as said, sometimes up to a second). Thats the bit that doesn't make sense to me.

Update 2:

Thank you so much for your concern, Annie K, but I do actually have a very serious condition. I have the most common life threatening, inherited disease in britain - Cystic fibrosis, although it has nothing to do with the heart specifically. I will, however, ask my doctors about it when I next go. Really Annie K, dont you have something better to do than be rude to people just because your not speaking face to face?

You most probably have a SINUS ARRYTHMIA. The heart rate increases and decreases with the breathing pattern. Very common in young people and totally harmless. An ECG is the only way to know for sure, so get checked out.

You may have a slight heart mumur, nothing to really worry about. They same thing happens to me, and sometimes it does it all on it's own, suddenly my heart will stop, and I cannot breath, then it will start again, but go faster for a bit. I am 27, it's been doing that for atleast 10 years.

While holding your breath your heart has to work overtime to compensate for loss of oxygen. Then when you start breathing again it restabilizes.

I THINK ITS SUCH A SHAME THAT YOU FIND TIME TO SIT AND HOLD YOUR BREATH, WHEN THERE ARE SO MANY PEOPLE WITH SERIOUS HEALTH ISSUES, START BREATHING AND COUNT YOURSELF VERY LUCKY, THAT YOU WOKE UP TODAY.
