Which one right?

1)A number of place was visited .

2)Number of places were visited

Which one of the above is grammatically right?

    If you can avoid the passive voice, that would be best. Could you say, "They visited a number of places" instead?

    The passive voice means that the subject in your sentence is being acted upon, not doing the acting. "Mistakes were made" is a classic example of the passive voice, and in that case, it's used to hide blame. It's often used in government or business documents as a cover-up tool. English experts encourage people not to use the passive voice as it makes writing seem weaker.
