Is Carboxyl monovalent or univalent?

I am actually doing a lab report on amino acids and I found two definitions on the web. Veterinary Dictionary says it is monovalent. The Medical dictionary says it is univalent.

Can someone EXPLAIN which it is, not just google/wiki it?

mono- and uni- are the prefixes that act as the same modifier...

Monovalent and univalent are just synonyms.
