Trying to remember a film name, can anyone help?

Can anyone help me remember a film name? 

I think it is a recent (ish) film, in colour. The plot is about a bunch of characters that end up all stopping at a motel in the USA, down a 'lonely road', in the middle of the night, when it is raining. Then, someone is murdered, and everyone accuses everyone else, and no one knows who it is. 

They all find out they have the same birthday date; well, it turns out that all the characters are imaginary, and the whole film has been played out in a mans head, who is sat (in a straight jacket?) in a chair in a mental institute. 

I really want to see it again, I remembered it being good, and I cant find the name of the film ANYWHERE... if any one could help that would be excellent.

The film tells two stories. Ten strangers, after a series of accidents, find themselves stranded at the same motel during a rainstorm, where they start suffering increasingly horrible deaths. Elsewhere, at an emergency midnight meeting, a doctor attempts to convince a judge that a serial killer about to go to his death is, in fact, insane and cannot be held accountable for his actions. The convergence of these two stories marks an unusual plot twist.

the 1st theory that includes my suggestions is "indicators"- a action picture with Mel Gibson, Joaquin Pheonix and Rory Culkin, directed via M.Knight Shyamalan, produced 2002. there's a scene and is the reason how the priest (Gibson) loses his faith by way of death of his spouse, and the digital camera cuts to a flashback the place we see his spouse dying, trapped against a tree via a vehicle. If reminiscence serves me wisely i think of that's how the scene performed out and what it appeared like. attempt "indicators."
