Funny you should ask..... I was just saying to my son this evening that the walls really aren't the most important part of the house to insulate.....

The cost depends on whether the house is existing or new construction. There are three types of material that can be blown into the walls -- Fiberglass (yes, the same material they put in overhead CAN be blown into the walls), although I wouldn't recommend it. Cellulose and then Spray Foam.

To make sure you're not paying too much, get several quotes from different companies. The last I knew, insulation companies are very competitive and will cut a deal.

If the house is already existing, I always recommend taking the drywall off to ensure best coverage. See the answer given above. Obstacles in the wall will prevent proper installation.

I would not install blown-in insulation into existing walls.

You will never recover the cost versus energy savings.

The insulation gets hung up on wires and nails protruding into the wall cavity, so it is impossible to fill the wall completely.

Besides, very little heat / cooling is lost through walls.
