What is with?.......?

People from England, Scotland or Wales constantly complaining about people calling them British? How is that different than someone calling me, someone from California, American?

I realize that the make up of the countries are different. Wales, Scotland and England are separate countries, and the states are not. But we are both part of larger entities.

I also know I am making a generalization, but do you know what I mean? If the 3 above mentioned countries are all part of Great Britain, why are there so many against being called British?

    To simplify things (I think!)

I can, of course see what you mean, but how would you feel if someone called you a New Yorker or a Texan, or even an Alaskan.

In the U.K. people are immensely proud of their (primarily) own area, then county, after which comes country. The natural follow on I suppose would be United Kingdom (GB) and after that it would have to be Europe.

I don't think we have a problem about being called British. It's when Scots, Irish or Welsh get called English. Or maybe when some arrogant Englishman wants to pull rank when called British. Envy of the English, that's all it's about. It's England that has made the largest impact on world history, industry and trade. USA wouldn't exist but for the English. Sure, the Scots, Welsh and Irish have all made contributions. But all under the rule of the English. The major contribution that the Irish made to US is a direct result of English rule - English landlords treated the Irish like animals during the Irish potato famine, so many fled to US for a better life. I'm Welsh and certainly don't like being referred to as English. But credit where credit is due.
