6 month "birthday" - did you celebrate it?

My MIL is upset that my hubby and I didn't have a family party to celebrate the fact that today is my son's "6 month birthday". I'd never heard of this and think it's a bit silly. Did any of you celebrate it with your children?

For the first year, I take a picture of my child on their "month birthday" to see how they've grown. I put them all together in an album so you can see the difference in order from 1 month to 1 year. We don't have a party until he turns 1 year old.

No! Maybe it's a thing with her. I mean it's great that your child has grown and learned six month's worth of stuff, right?

But the baby won't remember it, and even IF you did celebrate, just make it between you & whoever is special to you. The first birthday is hard enough if you have a party! The 1-year-old won't remember, but you will have the pictures!

Don't let her bully you into something you don't want to do. You have enough to do with a 6-month-old on your hands! I hope everything turns out well for you and your family. Take lots of pictures. I'm sure you're finding out, that first year goes by so fast!

NO, but if she is so concerned why did she celebrate the 1, 2, 3, 4, or 5 month birthdays? You know she could have had a party too.

LOL. Nope we sure didn't. Unless you have a terminally ill infant I think its a little strange to celebrate months with parties and such. Now if your baby is sick then I can see how you would want to celebrate a birthday at 6 months.

Sounds like you might have your hands full with your MIL. Good luck with that one!

I've never heard of a 6 month birthday before. I have however heard of a birthday celebrated once every 12 months.

A birthday is the day you were born on. That comes round every 12 months. End of story. Explain to your MIL it's all because of the length of time it takes for the Earth to go round the Sun. I'm sure she'll understand.

Does sound kinda silly. It's called a birthday for a reason. Everyday is special when you have children and if you celebrated everyday it would defeat the purpose of a birthday, graduation or extreme accomplishment.

Yeah, I agree. Sounds like another stupid thing for the MIL to criticize the daughter-in-law for. Why don't you say "we celebrate our son's life every day!"?

We've planned a family vacation that just happens to fall on our daughter's 6 month "birthday", but that's just coincidence.

I have 2 kids...my girl is 21 months and my boy is 4 months. Whenever either of them turns a month older my husband and I say to them and each other "happy ___ months old!" and that is it. I think a 6 month old party is not only ridiculous, but too much work. It's definitely a noteable day, but no more than that!

I don't recall one myself, but it sure sounds like fun. Have a belated party for your baby! It can't hurt.

One person who answered said something about them not remembering it. So does that mean you can be mean to old people because they won't be able to remember you did so later? Meh. I just had to say that because it was bothering me.

Anyways, have a party anyways. It does sound like fun. We always have several birthday parties for a single person in my family anyways. My birthday is tomorrow, and I'm already aware that I'll be having at least four parties.
