    NH4Cl is solid

Ammonium chloride (NH4Cl) is, in its pure form, a clear white water-soluble crystalline salt of ammonia.

For the above reaction NH4Cl is solid.

smoke is a heterogeneous ("different phase") continuity. This means that it is neither a solid or a gas but both!~ the ammonium chloride molecules(solid) are dispersed/equally distributed in a gas phase of air.
