Alcohol Carding at grocery store?

My bf and I go to a grocery store to buy foods. He gets some booze for himself. I'm not 21 (I'm 20). When we get to the checkout, the checker asks him for his ID. But then asks me for my ID. Apparently both people have to be 21 to get the alcohol, even if I'm not the one going to buy it or anything of the like. I didnt have my ID on me anyways.

They said it was policy. How would this work with a parent there with their teenage son or daughter? It's only happened at this one particular grocery store, we can still go to ANY other store and both not be carded.

What do you think of this?

Update:

This is in wisconsin, they have an all card policy. But I'm not sure how that works, pretty much its been them carding 60 year olds and what not. But I'm not the one buying the alcohol. Pretty much it seems to be if I'm just standing there..

We thought it was just the cashier being like an overprotective mother to another person kind of thing, but so far it has happened twice. Now when he wants booze I just stay in the car heh.

Update 2:

I realize it is their job, and I'm not holding a grudge for it. I did think it was interesting and just wanted to know what other people thought and how it would work in other situations :)

Yes. He could be 21 and buying it for you, age 20. I'm sure it is store policy because they will lose their business license if he were buying the booze for you and you are underage. Next time don't go into the store with him.

Well first, store policy. They can refuse to sell to anyone for any reason.

Second, thats actually law. And yes I have refused to sell parents alcohol that have minor children with them and I have been refused when I have had minors with me. The law in my state says anyone under 35 must be carded for alcohol. And while you are not required to card those over 35, if you sell them alcohol without an ID its against the law. If you cant show me a valid ID, even if you are not the one handing me the money, you are not getting the alcohol.

While I believe its not for you, my criminal record and hard earned money as well as my career are not worth the chance. Sorry.

    Same policy goes for tobacco.

Source(s): I am also going to refuse to sell you alcohol if I can tell you have already been drinking. I can be held liable in court for any crimes you commit for selling alcohol to a person that is already drunk. Since I cant determine how much is too much, if I can tell you have been drinking at all, you are not buying alcohol from me. I would like to hear your opinion when you are the one behind the counter and its YOUR job and criminal record that are on the line. Do you not realize that IF the adult gets caught giving the minor alcohol the person who sold the alcohol is held liable for delinquincy of a minor as well as for any crimes the minor commits while drinking. Like I said, I believe its not for you, but my life isnt worth the risk. I did it too many times when I was underage so it does happen.

Sounds right, Jewel does that by me, it is ridiculous but it covers their ***. Most liquor stores really only want to see one ID that says 21, just go there from now on...

They have legal responsibility to card both of you. Next time don't be so stupid as to stand in line with him

  • I think all you had to do was say i don't even know this dude why are you asking for my ID, go Shish and walk out the door.!~!
