personally, I have never been a user of Solaris, but ive heard some good and bad reviews for it. If ur more geared towards UNIX OS's than to Windows or Mac(which by the way is built on UNIX), i would suggest the new Ubuntu (its free). It has a very nice interface with colorful menus and icons and such. It also has cool little dektop effects like wobbly windows and the desktop "cube"

here are some other reasons why it is nice:

    1. very user friendly setup and updates.

    2. can support many types of files (you can get a thing called WINE to emulate windows)

    3. it has a user community of like 500,000 on ubuntuforums.org, where people answer each other's questions about Ubuntu

    hope that helped.

I'm a fan of Ubuntu for Linux. However, I have heard good reviews of Solaris.

Personally, I use Mac OS X (10.5 Leopard), and that is Unix based as well.

    Unix is awesome.

because the previous answer exhibits, you are able to get a picture of modern-day interest with "playstation ". The historic thanks to work out a "log" is by potential of the "lastcomm" command. This in straight forward words works, besides the undeniable fact that, in case you've grew to grow to be on prolonged accounting, oftentimes with the "acctadm" command. There are frequently also more effective state-of-the-paintings source administration/accounting programs accessible, yet it is pretty universally accessible and would fulfill your needs.

Hi, I know Solaris is as close as u can get to Unix, but I don't really like it.

Its hardware support sucks, it looks horrible, and it has even lesser software and multimedia support than linux or BSD.

FreeBSD is good but again hardware support isn't that good.

    I use openSUSE 10.3, can't wait for openSUSE 11.0.

I've not used Solaris - we used to have it in our enterprise as it was the only OS that Pro-Engineer ran on. Right now, on my laptop, I'm running OpenSuSE 10.2.

I really like Fedora Core, very nice documentation, and many programs available.
