My violin is not making any sound?

I just bought a new violin, and I admit I don't know anything about them. I've placed the wooden thing under the strings so they are strung tight. Now when i use the stick on the strings I get a really low buzzing and mainly not music. I'm wondering if it is the stick, I put wax on it, but I notice when I strike it slowly over the strings the white hairs touch the wood of the stick... Is that the problem? And with the violin came these iron clam things with a screw button on top. What is that for and could that be something I need to add to the violin to get sound out of it?

Update:

I think it is the wax, maybe i did not put enough on the bow. I did wonder if I had to make the wax warm before applying.

The clams actually seem to be fine tuners, another mystery solved :D. I'll try the wax tonight.

ok so, the wooden thing...stick..thing with the hair and stuff O__O is called bow :3

you need to tighten your bow, not too tight, but enough when you press the hair with your hands it doesn't easily touch the wood, but not too tight, you still want alittle curve on the bow

next, i dunno wax...wut you meant ... you mean rosin? O__o cause if it is, then put ALOT of rosin on your bow cause tat's the sticky stuff that makes it all sticky so there's friction so you can make sounds

the wooden thing under the strings is called a bridge, ya...you need to tune your violin, if it's the first time you've had it, then you might need to use the pegs

the ... 4 things... on the top of the violin...ya...they're called pegs, turn it till it's in tune

DON"T TURN ALOT, turn while playing with the bow, open strings so you don't like...break it T__T"

might wanna get a shoulder rest....less hurtful when you play

You need a LOT of rosin on a new bow. More then you could imagine. That might be part of it. The bow should be drawn over the strings between the end of the fingerboard and the part holding the strings. Don't be afraid to bear down; you're going to need pressure to get sound out, especially when just begin playing. Also make sure the strings are tight. That's another factor in sound. Finally, where did you get it and how much did you pay? If you paid less than $300 and/or bought it online, it's possible it's not setup correctly. The bridge may be in the wrong position or, worse, the sound post may be set incorrectly. The bridge may be easy to fix (for someone who knows what they're doing!), but the sound post may involve taking the violin apart. Ask your teacher at your first lesson to play it for you and give you some advice. Good luck!

Well, there's a lot that could be wrong there. First of all, you need to tighten the hair on the bow. The bottom of the bow has a screw so you can tighten the hair. Tighten it until the bow is about a finger's width from the hair.

Next, you need to put a lot of rosin (the wax) on the bow the first time. Spend at least 5 minutes rubbing the rosin up and down the bow.

If it still doesn't produce sound after that, then it's possible that you placed the bridge wrong (the wooden thing that goes under the strings), or the soundpost is out of place. Take it to a local music store to see if they can help you with that - and get a price before they do it, because getting a bridge fit correctly can be expensive, and to fix the soundpost you need to take the top off the violin.

As for the clam things - unless they are the fine tuners, I don't know what they are.
