Compiling Custom Kernel?
Care to share your custom kernel compilation experience on any UNIX?
I hope you can also share errors you encountered and how you overcome them.
Plz include your Operating System Version as well
Thanks hope from this everyone can learn from each other.
I used FreeBSD 7.0 p-3 i386
FreeBSD compiles from a text file
Default BSD kernels do not include sound driver
Had to enter it manually
Removed additional network drivers i did not need
Wireless Card driver was of different atheros chipset had to download hal from madwifi
Everything works after Recompiling
Kernel occupies less memory became more responsive
Recently i recompiled again to include the ULE scheduler (Heard it was better than 4.4BSD)
Never compiled Linux Kernel before...
Going to try soon =)
No I have already Compiled a Custom Kernel for BSD so many times I can remember the steps clearly.
Just want to know how others compiled their own Linux Custom kernel and problems they faced =)
I know for Linux you have to download the source but never actually attempted it
OMG don't tell me no one ever custom kernel before?
Hey Lug you are supposed to be a geek right? Every geek MUST have a custom Kernel for their UNIX to be considered one?!
Good Luck !
But still I think you should custom kernel will improve your system performance by a wide margin

Edit :
As you may know I am currently making my own Ubuntu, which is a combination of (Gutsy and Hardy) repositories. The base I am using is the Gutsy kernel.
Features will include :
Compiz Fusion direct from Compiz-git source with automatic updating (currently v 0.7.7)
Firefox 3 - The Official Mozilla version.
Open Office 3
WINE 1.0
utorrent
Mplayer Move Player as default
Real Player 11
iTunes 7.0
Plus there is much more I am currently working on. Once it is finished I will be releasing an ISO.
