What can I do to help my pulled hamstring?

I have been running and when I go downhill it hurts and also makes me kind of limp. Should I run or not? I pulled my hamstring from either the long jump or the hurdles. Which event out of those 2 do you think it was?

    You may want to try a "hot/cold" treatment for your ham. All you have to do is to alternate applying heat (try a heating pad or warm water in a whirlpool) and cold (ice pack is usually the easiest to do) IMMEDIATELY after the heat...I usually have my athletes do 10 minutes heat, and immediately do 10 minutes cold. Try and do this for 3 cycles, as one hot, one cold is one cycle. The key thing here is.....ALWAYS end on COLD, and don't stretch that muscle when you are done with this! If you do so, you just totally negated everything you did for the hot/cold treatment.

    The rationale for this is to rehab the muscle through expanding (heat cycle) and contraction (cold cycle).

    While you are rehabing, I would just jog and not put some added pressure on your hamstring, and no hurdles, no jumping...Besides, how much jogging have you done before and during the season?

    You can pull your hamstring anytime you are running or jumping.

    If it causes you to limp do not run.

    Ice the muscle several times each day.

    Massage and gently stretch.

    If you can wrap the leg or wear a sleeve so you will not limp then do so. Run as fast as you can without feeling the pull. That is the speed you can train at until you are better.

    If you continue to harm the muscle it will get worse, not better.

  • Muscle injuries aren't very serious and heal quickly, but you should still take a few days off. I think it was the long jump that did you in, because of the greater effort (and consequently, force) while doing it.

    Use the RICE formula: Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation...

    rest your muscle

    don't use it

    bath it in hot water everyday or put ice on it

    (it was probably the long jump)
