Has anyone used socks for their dog's feet to keep the carpet clean when he comes in after the rain?

We are about to move into our new house and have gone for a fairly light coloured carpet (yellow labrador so at least the hair won't show!) But trying to find out if it is possible to get a dog to wear those socks. Can't seem to find any for indoors except the stupid impractical ones for small dogs. Any ideas welcome (apart from saying choose a dark carpet!)

Update:

Thanks for all the ideas - I was really asking about the socks because I have never seen them but from what you are all saying it sounds like a bad idea - think I'll stick with the towel and training him to stay on the mat until cleaned! (We live on the beach and he is in and out all day long!)

It's not too realistic - the dog is going to pull them off right away.

We keep a cheap towel in a chair by the door. When the dog goes out, we lay it down on the floor in front of the door. We've trained our dog to stop on the towel when she comes in and wait to be wiped off (of course, we have to be there waiting).

I'll agree with most of the other posters. It will be easier for you and the dog if you just keep an old towel or two near the door on rainy days. Much quicker than trying to put four dog boots on.

I've trained my dog to wipe her feet before she goes inside and it works quite well.

If you are still set on making the dog wear socks, why not use some pairs of old gym-socks doubled up with a velcro strap around the top to hold them up, but not cut the circulation off from your dogs paws?

I lay out a towel in the entry, and hang a second towel on the doorknob. My dogs know that they cannot step off the towel until each of their feet has been cleaned. :)

It's very easy to teach, and it doesn't take nearly as long as putting on socks would.

Why don't you try your pet store. I know when I bought my dog Mutt Luks, they tried one on her. At first she walked a little funny, but after 5 minutes she was fine. I wish sometimes they made sandals too(lol) because of the hot ashphalt in the summer. Its hard to tell them it too hot or too cold on their puppy paws to go for walks.

That's funny! =P Maybe it's going to be uncomfortable for him, though. You should just read the weather forecast each day and take him inside if the forecast says it's gonna rain.

We use products like these http://litterboy.com/Details.cfm?ProdID=285&catego...

You just dip the dogs paws in the container, and they are perfectly clean. They work really well, and you can train them to do it on their own. It has kept our carpet clean. Good luck.
