My dog has a hat insecurity and not sure why?
I have a 1 year old frenchie that has the happiest personality and loves everyone and everything.
However in the last couple months we've noticed that if someone comes over wearing a hat or we pass by someone with a hat on he gets extremely upset.
He's not aggressive at all normally and it's not even that with hats he wants to attack but he starts barking like crazy, his hair stands up on his neck and back and he doesn't know what to do with himself.
As far as my knowledge he has never had a traumatic experience with a hat and we got him at 2.5 months. But I'm not sure if something may have happened before we got him and now he's developed a fear.
How can I calm his fear without traumatizing him more?

Desensitize.
Put a hat on the ground and allow him to approach and check it out. Praise for willingness to approach and a non-aggressive response.
