Please, vets.. Can I give my dog...?

I have a mini French Poodle, she is old (15 years old), her weight is about 12 to 14 pounds. She has pain in her back legs, can I give her some kind of pain relief pills like the ones we people take?

or what can I give her?

As far as I know, there are no vets here and even if there were, they cannot diagnose or treat your dog over the Internet. Real Vets don't have the time, to answer questions on Yahoo Answers! They are very busy people! What I do know, is that you can't just give your dog any kind of Human Medication, unless you ask your vet and your vet tells you what to give and how much to give. If she's having pain in her back legs, then you need to take her to a Real Vet! You need to find out what's causing the pain, before you treat the problem. The vet will do the necessary testing she needs, to find out what is causing pain in her back legs and treat her with the right medication!

You should call an actual vet and make an appointment. They have all sorts of supplements, such as glucosamine, that will help. Also, why does she have pain? Is it arthritis or just an injury? Injuries need to be treated! The vet can diagnose the problem.

Try looking at a pet store for joint supplements specifically for dogs.

BE VERY CAREFUL about giving human meds to dogs. Dogs do not process medicines as quickly, and so the meds stay in the dogs system MUCH longer than it would in a human's system and it is very, very, very easy to overdose the dog and destroy its liver- which will kill your dog.

Please, please don't follow this dosing as I don't remember it exactly. My 15 pound poodle was prescribed human OTC pain meds by a vet. She got something like a quarter of a baby aspirin every other day. Any more would have killed her.

Look into other things and talk to your vet before giving human medicines to a dog. Your dog is older and as such may be more sensitive to medicines- her metabolism has likely slowed and it may take even longer than unusual to process meds. An ordinary dose may be too much for her, and older dogs have more trouble living through shocks to their systems.

Think about some sort of joint supplement specifically for dogs. Talk to your vet. But avoid human over the counter meds unless it is recommend by your vet. The risk just isn't worth it.

Does it sound like my vet is doing everything he should be doing? No, he should not leave dog alone. Should I insist on an x-ray?no If my dog truly has not had a bowel movement in five days, shouldn't she be showing signs of discomfort or bloating by now?i would believe so How long does it take before constipation would start poisoning a dog's system?a few days i belive

    Absolutely not.

Dogs have different body chemistry to humans meaning medicines for human use can have completely different effects on animals. Plus, think about the dosage issue. A human pill for a 15 pound dog would be like you or me aking a burrito sized tylenol

Take your dog to a vet. Giving her human medication, even over the counter or 'baby' meds could easily kill her

Take this elderly dog to the vet for a diagnosis and treatment. An elderly dog should be taken to the vet every 6 months for a senior health check.

Anyone who isn't qualified and who hasn't set eyes on the dog would be totally irresponsible to recommend any pain relief for this dog. This is a job for the vet. Why haven't you already taken her to the vet.

I don't believe Vets hang around here but NO, you can't give dogs the same medicine as humans. Call your VET.

Can you give a dog Tylenol? check out the link below.

You should take her to the vet,but you can give her 1/8 of a Bufferin twice a day, with food. You can also give her a glucosamine/chondroitin supplement ( like Cosamin) and salmon oil, which is great for the joints.Warm baths and compresses and gentle massages can help, too.

I have a 14 year old Pit Bull and he has a lot of joint pain and my vet told me to give him 1 baby aspirin (81 mg) for pain. You might try this until you can get her to the vet.

Never give human medicine to dogs or any pets. Take her to the vet and get the right medicine for her.
