How does a doctor know whether a baby is small due to SGA or if they have the due date wrong.?

I did not have an early dating scan, so within a week or so the due date could be off. the doc and sonographer keep saying that the baby is measuring a week small. How do they know she isn't just normal and the due date is off? Is there a way to know? Also, 'everything looks good'. Is being 8 days behind in size that significant. I am 6 months now. thanks

Well, they are going by the date they have according to what you told them your LMP at your first visit. After your baby is born they will do a couple of test on your baby in the nursery to get a more accurate age. They should be able to tell your more then, whether they think the baby is still considered small or average.

no they can be up to 2 weeks off!! i had early scans and at everyone i was 3 days off when i had one at 22 weeks he was right on to date!! so you could move closer to your date or you could just be having a smaller baby!! its all just a guessing game really and use the "average" so i would not worry about it! =)

oh and also the further along you are they can be off even more only the early scans give close accuracy

Both good answers. My 4th they said growth retardation was apparent.Said her femur didn't measure to the size of her head.Well she is short like her dad and she does have a big old head, but they scared me for nothing. She was born late and that was ok too. She was 6lbs13oz and just beautiful.
