  • Pediatric acute mountain sickness?

18 month old boy exhibited ataxia, sleepiness and loss of appetite upon first 24 hours of arrival to altitude of 8,400 feet. Today, all symptoms resolved seemingly instantly and coordination and sleep habits returned to normal. So, my question for someone with experience with children around this age dealing with altitude sickness is this...with HACE or HAPE would it be obvious that he was deteriorating further (i.e. not returning to normal/acclimating) or is this still a concern? Initially I thought the ataxia was from dizziness but now realize it could be more serious although he seems completely normal in every way now as of mid day Wednesday (yesterday).

  • I have a new mare... Have had her a week. On day 3 she developed a yellow snotty nose with thick yellow snot.?

Started antibiotics and no improvement after 4 days. She was breathing normally during all of this until today and between morning and noon she started sucking air like a full blown asthmatic. Took her to the vet immediately. She had a slight fever, lungs sounded ok and endoscope showed nothing abnormal. He gave her steroids, antibiotics and antihistamines. She is better but still laboured breathing. No previous episodes of heaves/COPD in her history. So does this sounds like heaves or a bad respiratory infection causing heave like symptoms? What do y'all think?

  • My baby fell off the bed last Monday. The next day he had uneven pupils. I took him to the Dr and they did a CT and it was clear.?

I am worried sick over it. If it has been a week and his pupils are still uneven should I take him back? Everything else seems good but he is only 5 months so it is difficult to evaluate his coordination and of course he doesn't talk so it's impossible to say if he is having pain or anything like that. Is he out of the woods as far as dying? I'm assuming if he was in any danger they would not have sent us home. He never lost consciousness and is very alert, smiling, trying to crawl , reaching for us etc.I watch him while he's sleeping and think "is his hand twitching because of the concussion or did it do that before?" I am trying to evaluate him and eaten up with guilt and can't stop worrying. I'm not sure what to do or if he's ok and just needs time to heal. I asked my husband if he could still die from it and he said "I don't THINK so" and that has me wound up all over again. When are we out of the woods with it? I would have thought we are good by now but, unfortunately, I'm not a neurologist. Before anyone says anything about him falling, please be kind. It was my fault...I turned my back on him for a moment. He has had a recent spurt in movement and I didn't realize how much. I have beat myself up over it and stayed up watching him breathe for the first 3 nights. I am horrified that it happened.

  • What do I do with my dog?

I have a 3 lb chi/pom mix. We recently got a chi puppy. He just turned 6 mos. Did not realize the female was in heat but as soon as I did we got the male fixed-as in saw that she was in heat, immediately separated them and took him to the vet 2/days later. So I assumed all is well and I will take her to get her fixed as soon as she is no longer in heat. When I picked him up the tech-who definitely knew I was trying to prevent a breeding said nothing to the effect that they could still mate successfully. I am not a breeder and have always spayed and neutered my pets. They have great care and a loving home and vet care until they die. Anyway, woke up the next night to them squealing from being tied up. Now im worried that she could be pregnant and don t know what to do. I don t know what the chances are and don t know what the risk is to her. I also feel terrible about being put in the situation of having to kill any possible puppies. What would you do? Do you think the tech... Knowing the situation and lengths I went to to separate them and get him fixed-should have said something? I am so frustrated.

  • I need an explanation for a situation that just happened?

My husband and I were keeping a dog for a couple we know. My husband picked him up at the owners house, claims to have never gone out the back door and did set the alarm when he left. The owners returned and said when they got home the back door was opened and the alarm was not set and that they know they locked the back door when they left. My husband is a responsible and honest guy and has picked up and dropped off the same dog a few times before without incident. So, what explains this situation besides that he walked in, left the back door open and failed to set the alarm. I know he would not do it intentionally and struggle to think he would do it accidentally as he is uber responsible. If he doubted any of it I think he would tell me "I am not certain" instead of 'I know for sure." These are really nice people and we do a good job for them. I wouldn't want to let them down. Is there anything else that could have possibly happened? If so, what?

  • inverter/ power source for mobile business? help:)?

I have a mobile business and need an inverter to run no more than two items at one time. The largest two as far as wattage being a room air conditioner and a forced air dryer. I have deep cycle marine batteries in a series as a power source. Can anyone recommend a brand of inverter (thinking 10000 watts continuous) and how many batteries would you have in the bank? Basically it will run the ac continuously for 6-8 hours, small no heat dryer for 3 hours total (not continuous) and other smaller items for short periods of time. Also, thoughts on pure sine wave vs modified. I am trying to stay away from a generator for various reasons including noise and not wanting it to look tacky mounted to the back of my vehicle. I realize there are a lot of variables here but my crappy 5000 peak watt inverter is shutting off when I use my dryer...need that to stop and need to add ac. Want to be able to work on my vehicle without it or a generator running continuously. Thanks.

  • mortgage early payoff?

My original loan amt was 46000 at a rate of 7.75% for 15 years. The principal balance is 42,200. My monthly payment is 475. Currently the home is worth about 34000. If I pay 450 extra each month how long will it take to have some equity in my home?!?

  • cow Milking help?

OK I have a young jersey and this is her first lactation. Her calf was weaned 3 days ago and I am hand milking her twice a day. 3 of her quarters work great...let's down milk immediately and it comes out in big long streams. The remaining quarter is very difficult to get milk out of. Its like the milk comes down great but doesn't want to come out of the very tip...like the hole it comes from is pin prick sized. Udder is not hot she is not sore and milk is not lumpy so I don't think she has mastitis. Any suggestions? Ever have this problem before?

  • Toxic parent...what to do?

i have tried to maintain a relationship with my dad in spite of his abusive nature. there have been many many instances where i was hurt and in disbelief...lots of control and demeaning/belittling behavior etc. i tried thinking hes the only father i would ever have and i would regret it if i didnt. anyway...the last incident was the last straw and i dont think there is a way to have a relationship with him without being hurt. so...any experience with this? how did you feel afterwards? repurcussions? tried anything that worked without completely undermining your dignity? thanks! also...pretty sure he has antisocial personality disorder or narcissistic

  • Rocksolid floor prep question...?

I have cleaned, degreased, and filled cracks in the garage floor (let cure 10 days). It has been powerwashed and swept (you could eat off of it now). I mixed the etching solution according to the directions and applied to pre moistened garage floor. The directions state that if the solution does not fizz the floor is sealed and needs further prep and that if it does fizz it will do so for 4-5 minutes. I applied the etching solution and it did fizz but for a very short time (Less than 1 min). Also, the floor does not feel very rough...in fact, I can't tell any difference from now to when there was nothing done besides cleaning. Any suggestions from someone that has used this product or has knowledge of etching would be much appreciated.

  • When did you get back to workouts after pregnancy?

Here's the deal...before I got pregnant I was working out a lot...doing triathlons and in great shape...I have always worked out. I told myself I would continue to do so throughout my pregnancy and did not (couldn't stay awake for the first trimester...in school...moved). I had my baby in November-she was 6 weeks early. I have been so tired and have little help with her...I feel terrible for not already working out regularly and am starting to lose faith in my ability to lose this weight! I just want to hear from someone who has been through this and how it worked out for you. I have never been in such bad shape and had no idea what having a baby does to your body!

  • I am pregnant and have a bladder infection...?

The problem is that the antibiotics my dr. called in is Keflex, a cephalosporin. If you are allergic to pennicillin (which I am VERY) you are not supposed to take Keflex. I do not want to take the risk of finding out the hard way if I will have a cross reaction, nor do I want to NOT take something to help and it lead to a kidney infection. When I talked to the nurse at the dr.'s office she said "you do not HAVE to take your medication." duh, thanks for that. It isn't that I want to be non compliant, I just don't want to take that paticular antibiotic because I do not think it is the wisest safest choice. AND since I am not a dr. I do not have all the information to make the best decision...that is what your doctor is supposed to be for. I don't know if having an autoimmunie disease has anything to do with my sensitivity to many antibiotics (pennicillin, sulfa, levaquin, cipro...) or not, but the problem is there and I am just looking for some help. So, what would you do? Take your chances, try a natural remedy (again, I don't want to risk it being worse...i.e.kidney infection), try another antibiiotic? How do you talk to your dr. where they do not treat you like an idiotic hypochondriac when there are very real consequences to taking these medications (seizures, throat swelling, tendon tears...to name a few I have experienced). I am scared for me and the baby. I don't know what the best thing to do is and I am not a pharmacist. What would you do?

  • Did anyone out there have a sonogram where their babies head measured smaller percentile wise than their body?

If so, what were the percentiles and was everything ok? Did you have to go for an fMRI?

  • How does a doctor know whether a baby is small due to SGA or if they have the due date wrong.?

I did not have an early dating scan, so within a week or so the due date could be off. the doc and sonographer keep saying that the baby is measuring a week small. How do they know she isn't just normal and the due date is off? Is there a way to know? Also, 'everything looks good'. Is being 8 days behind in size that significant. I am 6 months now. thanks

  • Thyroid and pregnancy question...?

I am now in my second trimester and have been previously diagnosed with Hashimoto's. I take thyroid replacement. I have been to one prenatal visit and only saw the nurse (at that time she scheduled my future appts with the doc). I spoke with her then about checking my TSH and T4 Free levels and she didn't seem to think it was important. I have not had a dosage adjustment and it has not been monitored. I am seeing the Dr. today. My question is this...am I over reacting to think they should be taking it more seriously and checking my TSH levels etc. The nurse also did not tell me that you were not supposed to take your prenatal vitamin with the thyroid meds as it has a high enough level of iron in it to keep you from absorbing all the thyroid medication properly. It seems irresponsible for them to not mention this. I just recently came across this information and I am pretty upset that it has not even been discussed up to this point...do you think that is a valid point? It can cause developmental delays and low IQ if you do not get the right amount of thyroid especially in the first trimester. I am just frustrated that I tried to be proactive about this and the Dr. ignored it completely. What do you think?

  • Does it sound like I have pneumonia? I had a bad cold for about five days?

it started in my head and moved into my chest a little (some congestion). I stayed over a humidifier/used vics and tylenol for a few days and felt better (as far as fatigue and just feeling sick goes). I have a relatively unproductive persistent cought that mostly acts up at night. No yellow or green stuff...if anything just clear to clear/white and not much of it. I have had some difficulty breathing but not enought to keep me from work or anything. I have been diagnosed with bronchial asthma in the past but do not take anything for it.

Also, I am pregnant and hesitant to get on antibiotics or steroids. I am going to the Doc next week, I am just wondering what it sounds like to you guys...don't you have to have yellow or green phlegm with pneumonia (indicating infection?) Thanks
