I am pregnant and have a bladder infection...?

The problem is that the antibiotics my dr. called in is Keflex, a cephalosporin. If you are allergic to pennicillin (which I am VERY) you are not supposed to take Keflex. I do not want to take the risk of finding out the hard way if I will have a cross reaction, nor do I want to NOT take something to help and it lead to a kidney infection. When I talked to the nurse at the dr.'s office she said "you do not HAVE to take your medication." duh, thanks for that. It isn't that I want to be non compliant, I just don't want to take that paticular antibiotic because I do not think it is the wisest safest choice. AND since I am not a dr. I do not have all the information to make the best decision...that is what your doctor is supposed to be for. I don't know if having an autoimmunie disease has anything to do with my sensitivity to many antibiotics (pennicillin, sulfa, levaquin, cipro...) or not, but the problem is there and I am just looking for some help. So, what would you do? Take your chances, try a natural remedy (again, I don't want to risk it being worse...i.e.kidney infection), try another antibiiotic? How do you talk to your dr. where they do not treat you like an idiotic hypochondriac when there are very real consequences to taking these medications (seizures, throat swelling, tendon tears...to name a few I have experienced). I am scared for me and the baby. I don't know what the best thing to do is and I am not a pharmacist. What would you do?

  • I would not take the medicine if you are scared of an allergic reaction. I would call and ask for something else though, and be sure to take it. Also, from personal experience most home remedies from bladder infections dont really work, and you dont want things to get worse. I am prone to UTI's, and eventually if you dont get treated they CAN turn into kidney infections and worse. Once I didnt have money for my prescription and everyone told me to just drink cranberry juice. While this may work for some, I woke up two days later peeing straight blood... complete with clots. I was in the ER in no time, and guess what? If I had just taken the antibiotic it would have worked. The Dr. there told me that drinking cranberry juice and other home cures dont really work. All it does is balance the pH level for a short time, NOT long enough to cure the infection. It can help at the very early stages, but once you have a full blown infection, forget it!

Yuck, I just finished my last dose of Keflex today for an oh-so-lovely bladder infection. If you are allergic to it then you need to let your doctor know so that he or she can prescribe something else. There is something called Macrobid(or generic name Nitrofurantoin) that is prescribed to pregnant women for bladder infections. Maybe you might be able to take that. It is better to get a bladder infection treated or else you risk developing a kidney infection, which is more serious, and can possibly cause you to go into pre-term labor. I suggest you call your doctor and let him or her know that you cannot take the Keflex due to allergy and he or she will prescribe something else. Good luck.

i took microboid or something like that and it worked great. i would tell them you want that and not keflex or tell them you want something else. a bladder infection usually clears itself up without meds tho depending on the severity and it wont hurt or cause any harm to the baby, just if you deliver and have it it can pass the bacteria while delivering, but other than that it wont hurt anything. it will hurt you more than the baby. also drink tons of water, cranberry juice helps a little but its just a myth when they said it treats it, it doesnt treat it it just adds a bit of relief. but down the water and it will flush out your system and you will urinate alot and help clear it out, also dont hold it when you have to go, go right away and lay on your left side

Call that doctor and tell them you are not comfortable taking that paticulair antibiotic and that you would appreciate them calling you in a prescription for another antibiotic that you are not allergic to. If they can not or will not do this I would then inform them that you will be taking your buisiness elsewhere, and seek medical attention from another physicain who has time to listen to thier patients needs, and concerns, i mean after all you are paying them yo help you, and that includes listening to your concerns. Good luck, take care of yourself and your baby!

I would call the doctor and ask him to prescribe another antibiotic. TODAY.

IT is the doctor's as well as your responsibility to let them know of your allergies. If you do not get an antibiotic, you are risking a kidney infection, uterine contraction etc.

Well if your doctor knows that you are allergic to thes medications and that you are not to be taking them then I would sit down with him and tell that no you know for a fact that you can't be taking those medications and that if possiblae he needs to put you on something that you are not allergic to because you think that it will not only hurt you but that you think that will hurt the baby as well.

go to an urgent care or your general health doctor instead of your OB and let them know what medication you just cannot take.

I will die if I take pen. I have had a doctor try and give it to me anyway. You know what will happen to your body so go get help for this infection from another doctor.

My mom had a bladder infection when she was pregnant and it caused her to start contracting and go into labor way to early. I would advise you don't not try to treat this on your own. If you don't feel safe taking the antibiotic that's prescribed to you, talk to your doctor to see if he will switch you to something else.good luck.

  • i had a uti and they gave me amoxicilin i believe and it went away before the bottle of pills were done. try and find something that is better for you and show the doctor the name and have him prescribe it for you and the doctor should have you and your babies best concerns in his mind so if you explain you're allergic wtf is he going to say no take it anyways and risk you and your babies health. if he/she is a jerk like that you need another doctor. good luck but maybe try looking up medicine for bladder infections that wont effect you badly and make you worst
