Whose bright idea was it to put soldiers at risk rescuing a Journalist.?

It must have been a political decision, i cannot see a general sending troops to dig out a journalist - one who has made a career of being kidnapped - unless he was ordered to. Sounds fishy to me - more soldiers lives wasted on a lost cause.

Update:

It was a British soldier and a British/Irish journalist albeit working for a US newspaper, so the answer concerning america does not apply.

That idiot Brown of course. Some journalist wants to play dress-up in a war zone and soldiers have to risk their lives so he can get back to the Foreign Correspondents Club and finish his g & t. The argument that they killed a number of Taleban in the process is garbage, because they could have achieved the same result with a couple of 2000 lb bombs and no soldiers would have been in the firing line.

This was so obviously a political decision, symptomatic of the disgusting, immoral and corrupt Labour government.

Political decision? Have you ever MET a General? They aren't exactly political.

It doesn't matter if a guy is a lawyer, journalist, or a homeless man, none of us deserves to rot in a terrorist dungeon, or worse, get beheaded live on the internet.

I have no idea which journalist you're talking to, as you don't cite your source. But I think my point still stands.

part of our job in the military is to protect our fellow americans their occupation does not decide if they are helped or left to die. so picture yourself in the journalists shoes would you want help to live or would you rather be tourted till you die. we take an oath to protect and defend that would include someone who risks themselves to tell americans the story of what is happening. its not political its american.

believe it or not the military does not just take lives they do respect lives of fellow country men. and couldn't you just see the field day on cnn msnbc if they did not rescue a journalist.
