Seriously bad back - what can be done?

a few days ago I was lifting bricks to use to prop up my out door Christmas trees (it was in the 60's couldn't resist getting the outdoor decorations done now)

My back hurt the next day, when my mom ran over a pot hole that sent the car and everything in it flying and I wrenched my back even worse.

Now I can barely straighten up.

If anyone watches Anime... I'm walking like the 'Death Note' character L.

I've tried a hard core muscle relaxor my doctor gave me which just made me sleep, then I tried hydrocodone which just made me feel funky and I'll never take it again.

is there anything I can do to relieve the pain so I can walk normally? I can't sleep at night. I've tried my bed but I think it's too soft, I've tried sleeping on a flat back recliner, I've tried sleeping on the couch with pillows behind my back. I just can't do it anymore.

I feel for you. I know what you are going through right now because I have been a back pain sufferer for years. Although your doctor prescribed pain medication and muscle relaxers they are only part of what you can do to help with your back pain. You need to be going to physical therapy. There they can help you with different exercises you can do at home that will help reduce the pain and with time relieve the pain. I know what you are thinking, "I can't move. How am I going to be able to exercise?" Trust me, I thought the same thing. But moving around is what you have to do to help relieve the pain. The physical therapists can also recommend a deep massage to stimulate the blood flow in the area that is hurting you and to unknot the area. That is where the muscle relaxers and the massages will work together to give you relief. I recommend going to a orthopedic doctor as well. They are specialists in the skeletal structure and can give you advice and treatment options for your problem. Also try cold and "warm" not hot compresses. For cold compresses I put ice cubes in a gallon size zip lock bag and wrap a dry towel around the zip lock bag and put the bag over the area that is hurting. I leave it there for 15 minutes. Then I get a towel and dip it in warm warm and put it in a zip lock bag and place it over the area for 15 minutes. If the towel gets cold just take the towel out and dip it bag int he warm water. I hope you feel better soon. I know you are suffering.

While you were lifting the bricks you were doing something else to your back, compressing it slightly and pinching muscles as you did. Now the pinched muscles are giving you the trouble, they are wanting relief, to be released. Until they are released they will continue to hurt. The hitting the pothole was adding more compression to your back, the big jolt put more pinch into the muscle, more pain into you. As soon as you get it released everything will go back to normal. Here is how to release it:

    Back:

Place your left hand on your left knee. Place your right hand over your left shoulder and with your fingertips find the muscle next to your spine. Press on it and hold. Relax, take a deep breath and exhale and don’t tense up any part of your body. After about 30 seconds there should be a release happening and when it does slowly lower yourself forward onto your right leg. If you can lean over the outside edge of your leg it will be better for your release. Continue holding for a total of one minute. Then release but rest your body there for one minute longer. Then reverse and do the right side.
