Gastric Bypass Surgery: I need to stop smoking?

Ok so I am planning on having the gastric bypass surgery and I have to be smoke free for 30 days and remain smoke free after the surgery. Has anyone stop smoking on here. What did you do to stop smoking? How long have you been smoke free? Thanks

I am having Gastric Bypass next month and I had to stop smoking, I tried the patch and it worked for me. The only thing about the patch is that it would fall off half way through the day, so I started wearing it on my breast that way my bra would keep it on all day. When using the patch I also went to see a chinese doctor who put a staple in my ear to help me with my cravings(it only cost $65). Before I quit smoking I told myself that I was going to do this because I had came so far with wanting to have this surgery, When I started all this gastric bypass with my insurance and my doctor it was last April(2009) and look I am having surgery in March(2010). Also I have had to change my way of eating and I am talkin bout what I eat and my portion size...so what I am sayin is that if your gonna do all this hard work to be able to have this surgery, than you need to tell yourself that you are goin to stop smokin so you can have the surgery...it's just not worth it. Also I have a friend who had the surgery and she quit for a month, than after surgery she started again(what is the dr going to do reverse it...they can't.) LOL.

    GOOD LUCK!

As the others say there is complications of ulcers with gastric bypass that smoking exacerbates. But honestly the question is if she isn't compliant with this instruction, how does the surgeon or other doctor know if she is compliant with her supplement schedule, or her protein requirements, etc? And also...gastric bypass is a medical intervention for the long term treatment of the problems that happen with morbid obesity. The surgeon agreed to this so she could survive a long uncomplicated life. As it is now, she has nothing BUT complications to look forward to... My two cents...your mileage may vary.

This is a serious business. Go to your doctor and get a prescription for Chantix, it's far and away the most effective stop smoking med. And join a stop smoking group, that will also significantly increase your chances of success -- we're social animals and studies have found that people start and stop in groups.

motivation is the most important factor. if you want the surgery, just don't smoke.
