How many bottles of champagne should I purchase to serve 80 people?
What do you think? We're going to have around 80 people at our wedding, and let's face it, most of us will probably be drinking all night. We'll have beer and wine as well, so we'll probably keep the champagne unopened until we cut the cake, but we want to have enough of it for everyone to participate in the toast. What say all you fine, food-savvy people? How many bottles should we buy?

Small plastic champagne glasses hold 4 oz.-full, which no one does because they will spill. So say 3 oz. per glass with a reg. size champagne bottle 750ml=25 oz. 8 per bottle, 10 bottles at the most. You have other alcohol to drink and many people don't even drink the champagne. (Just did this for 80 people a few years ago.) If you are using glass (fancy) pour some water in and measure it and divide the ounces of the bottle by that. Get bubbly apple juice for the non drinkers/or kids. Congrats, and good luck. Cheap plastic ware at Oriental Trading Co. and Barefoot Bubbly has inexpensive but tasty champagne that is great for toasting.

If they are 750ml bottles (what a standard wine or champagne bottle is) there are roughly 5 x 5 ounce servings in each. 80 people would be 16 bottles. A few may want more so I would go with 20. 12 to a case two cases would be 24 and much easier to buy and handle. Besides if you buy it by the case it will be cheaper.

a good rule of thumb is to divide the # of guest by 4 then multiply by the # of glasses you plan to serve each guest. So about 37 to 40 bottles for a glass per guest. I would recommend a L. Roederer Cristal
