Ideas for a United States tax law research paper for law school?
Hi there, I am looking for ideas for an issue that is controversial enough for a research project for law school... something that I could write about 25 pages on. I'm looking to pursue something in the area of tax law. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Yes, the 1947 failed amendment to the Constitution that would have limited the maximum individual income tax rate to 25%. Most economists agree that a lower tax rate provides money for jobs, increased spending and the growth of of economy. Google - failed constitutional amendments - to begin your research.
Additional; Check out boos by Art Laffer. He was the chief economist for the Republication administration. He postulates that the ideal tax rate to foster employment and a healthy government is 11% and includes ALL taxes-state and federal, Social Security and Medicare as well. It's a numbers game that works. If you have near full employment so much more goes into the treasury there is no need for sales taxes, VAT (which is coming) and other nuisance taxes. Obviously the Democrats are against it because it destroys the progressive agenda of redistribution of wealth. I'm an economist -specialty taxation for 45 years-and have become a believer. This could be most of the research material you will need to do your thesis. There are also clips on YouTube on the subject. Email me if you think I can help. I'm retired and have some time.

How about tax exemptions for churches. Some of these churches are mega money-making businesses. Should they be able to hide under the cloak of a "charitable religious organization" when they are making millions - some even probably billions? And it's controversial because of the whole Establishment Clause issue. However, if you are trying to get this published into a Law Review, it may have already been discussed.

Independent contractor status is hot right now. Lots of companies hire independent contractors to save on employment taxes, but then employees sue and/or the IRS clamps down. There are strict criteria to qualify as an independent contractor and the tax penalties are steep for not following them.
I know this topic sounds boring compared to the constitutionality of income tax, which is a subject near and dear to my heart, by the way, but independent contractor status is actually something you're more likely to work on as a tax lawyer than the former, and there's a wealth of information on it.

Lets just take one of these to show your ignorance. The border guards. 1. Most of these go to Texas so its a jobs program for Texas that the rest of the nation has to pay for, where is bush from that's right Texas. This border problem has not just started it was going on during bushes reign as Governor of Texas why didn't he do something about it then he had the power to. so goes it for the rest of your long dissertation.

I think researching if income taxes are constitutional would be an interesting subject.
