You can make seat reservations for trains in Italy on-line. For the fast trains, seat reservations are mandatory. After you've selected a particular train on the trenitalia site: http://www.trenitalia.com/cms/v/index.jsp?vgnextoi... , a Journey - Fare Choice screen will come up. There's a pull down menu that says "more fares". Use that to select the Global Pass fare type. This will allow you to make a seat reservation only for the trip. The fast train reservations cost 10 euro on top of the pass you're using. During May, with the possible exception of dates around the 1st, you can just get a seat reservation at the station on the day of travel here in Italy.

That said, if you do not have a Eurail pass yet, it is cheaper to just buy individual tickets when you want to travel here in Italy. The pass only saves you money if you take a trip like Venice to Naples every travel day. The proposed trips you listed are all cheaper if you do not use a pass. Read the section called Common Railpass Mistakes Italy ... on the website that Willeke pointed you to.

For most other countries, you just buy the seat reservation in the station.

in case you're here in Italy, the trains without reservations (regularly interior reach trains) now and back do fill up. if so, you stand till adequate people get off the prepare for you to get a seat. a great sort of the time, that may not a issue and you have a seat, although this is a competent theory to be on the prepare slightly early or if this is one that in uncomplicated terms stops for a minute or 2 to permit people on and rancid to be close to a door while the prepare stops. on the grounds that there are actually not any reservations, you are able to take a seat in any attainable seat. it works the comparable way in distinctive places i've got been.

Unless you travel in the weekends, say Friday afternoon, evening, Saturday morning and Sunday afternoon and evening, you should be alright making your reservations after you have arrived in Europe. Only if one of your weeks here has a national holiday you can be sure to find all trains booked solid the days before and after.

In sources I put a link to a site with explanations how to book, he also covers when to book ahead.

Source(s): http://www.seat61.com/Railpass-and-Eurail-pass-gui... or pay supplements with a railpass If this link is not working, to go to http://www.seat61.com/ select railpasses in the top of the page and you will find the section "reservations or pay supplements with a railpass" below the mid of the page. Near the top of the page is a short list of internal links, including this one.
