Folder now seen as a file?

I'm not sure if there's anything that can be done, but it's worth a shot asking.

I ended up having to spend the bulk of today trying to get my computer working again, after it refused to boot. Apparently a system file got corrupted which prevented it from starting, even into Safe Mode. Anyway, I got it up and running for the time being (plan to reinstall Windows after I get everything backed-up), but I've got a small problem.

One of the folders I had some data in, during the recovery process, got screwed up and is now seen by the OS as just a file with no extension association. Fortunately I had backed the data up in that folder about a month ago (so it's not completely lost), but since I can't currently access the folder (since it isn't seen as one), I'm looking at a loss of a month's worth of stuff.

Does anyone know if it's possible to get this "file" changed back into a folder? If so, how? And is the file's 0 bytes a sign everything that was in it is lost, or is it just that since it was a folder, it wouldn't have the size, since they were separate files in and of themselves?

The computer is about nine years old, but getting a new one currently isn't an option, and is running Windows XP. This also seems to be the only data I've "lost" fortunately, aside from the last two years of e-mail (although I could have sworn I had a much more recent back-up that I just can't seem to locate), although it could also just the the only obvious problem.

If the file size is 0 bytes more than likely it is gone. Are you sure the folder wasn't moved? Try searching for the name of it. Also have you tried right clicking on the file and choosing properties and seeing what size it shows there? Lastly have you scanned for viruses? This could be virus related as well. Also I know you said a new pc isn't an option but you will find as XP becomes more and more phased out that it will become less and less safe, and less and less stable. The same thing happened with Windows 98 back in the day. You can only rely on an outdated OS for so long. It is sad but true. I am a huge fan of XP and I was sad to see it go but I saved up and built myself a new pc with Windows 7. It was a huge investment in both time and money but it was worth every penny.

EDIT: Just wanted to add that you do NOT want to mess around with that Windows Data Recovery. Go to PC World magazine and ask about it on their forums and you will see why. It hardly ever works right, can completely corrupt your system, and costs 50 bucks at its cheapest.

hi it is because the cache of the gadget isn't cleared immediately. it is storing the instructions because it became in the course of the installation. Restart your laptop in secure mode and regulate the settings of the folders and archives. close down the laptop and restart back after 5 minutes. this may decide your problem. If this also do not decide your problem attempt downloading the software "win Xp manager" or " Tuneup utilities" between the great software for tweaking your gadget on the great factor.
