Why is YA literature so shitty?

I've read Twilight, Hush Hush and Mortal Instruments. And they were all terrible terrible books. Not only is the writing lackluster, there is an abundance of Mary Sues. But the thing that bugs me the most is that they, especially Twilight and Hush Hush, have such weak and useless heroines who fall in love with potentially abusive boyfriends, the relationships are just so unhealthy.

Are there any well written YA books, like Harry Potter?

Update:

My bad. I didn't mean all. More like some. I do like Harry Potter.

Since Twilight, and all the stupid fangirl demands, YA literature has taken a huge hit and therefore people are just throwing out supernatural lovey-dovey stories left right and centre. I'm sick of them too - there's nothing good on those shelves any more, since you have to sift through tonnes of books about vampires in modern America pulling Mary-Sue girls and getting emo about it.

I would suggest the A Song Of Ice And Fire series by George RR Martin. I have just started reading book one, A Game Of Thrones, and it's hooked me already. It's fantasy, not set in the real world, and is a long, well-written read.

The Dragon Age books (The Stolen Throne, and The Calling) by David Gaider are also pretty good (the former is one of my favourite books). They're humerous and there is a romantic plot in the background, but it is definitely not a load of smush and has an interesting and non-typical conclusion.

The Inheritance series by Christopher Paolini are really good. The first book Eragon is an excellent read, I'd highly recommend it.

The Discworld Series by Terry Pratchett is pretty good, mostly if you like a humerous take on things as this makes up a big part of the narrative. Parts of the book's universe even parody the real world. And the first two books follow what can loosely be called a wizard, though I wouldn't liken him to Harry Potter. They're really entertaining though.

I wouldn't really call them YA books, (maybe for a slightly younger audience) but the Edge Chronicles by Paul Stewart and Chris Riddle and really very good. I read them when I was younger around the same time I read Harry Potter and I wouldn't have a problem re-reading them now I'm older. They're very entertaining, and completely original. (I'd say start with Beyond The Deepwoods and go from there, since there are a lot. In my opinion the Twig series was best). They're humerous and illustrated, but I wouldn't let that put you off. They are very good.

A book I really enjoyed was The Supernaturalist by Eoin Colfer (author of the Artemis Fowl series). Kind of a short read but it's still good the second and third time round.

If you're looking for vampire books that aren't Mary-Sue crap, try Interview With The Vampire by Anne Rice - an amazing read, the best vampire book out there in my opinion since it's so original and really differs from the rest in its genre.

If you are sick of the boring, Mary-Sue, relationship-based supernatural stuff, then I'd suggest to stay away from The House Of Night series (or anything by P C Cast) since these are the worst (after Twilight) for just being dull, bland and rife with Mary-Sues

Baha! I did like Twilight and Hushhush (Still like Hush Hush though) ! But i did notice that Edward is controlling and Patch...Well...He's a psycho who wanted her dead. Not the best thing for a young girl to have right? But, he is better than Edward and I like like book.

Bella is a weak girl, who needs help alllll the time. And nora? or whatever she is called (I might be thinking of fallen) is a little slow reading, but she's better than bella and atleast helps herself and such. I find hush hush better that twilight, but I prefer the adult section now (I still have a look at YA, because sometimes, there are really good books, like Rachel Caines books and I like Fallen and House of night!) :) I love Kelley Armstrong's characters.

I like Maria V Snyder books

The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins

Rachel Caine books - Weather Warden Series though

this is why even though i'm 18, i hang out in the 9-12 section. hey, don't judge me! i read lord of the rings and les mis! i just feel like i can trust the books to not be solid mary sues and OMG, HE"S SO HOTT. crap.

but try Jessica Day George and Sarah Beth Durst- they write fantasy stuff, some romance, but it's mostly action/ adventure/ awesomeness. i also really like Tamora Pierce. not a mary sue to be found, at least not in what i've read by her. it's pretty nice stuff- again, fantasy, some romance, but mostly kick-evils-butt stuff.

shrugs. James dashner's pretty good too, and i liked Suzanne collins, despite mocking jay's issues :)

oh! victoria Hanley wrote some really great stuff, and so did Dia Calhorn

i could send you a longer list if i had some time and examples of what you like :)

Gosh, I agree with you. Women aren't pieces of glass that break with a tap nowadays. It's really annoying. I still liked Hush, Hush though, haha. Anyway, if you want a book that has brave characters, a badass heroine, and scary as hell twists, pick up The Devouring by Simon Holt. Also, get a nightlight while you're at it. :)

Read "The Hunger Games" By Suzanne Collins, its so much better than twilight, and although there is some romance, the main character doesnt rely on any guys to help her.

Well then read adult books instead of complaining. It's not hard to go to the adult section when you walk into a bookstore or library, gosh....

    - The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins (it gets Stephen King's approval, anyway)/

So you've read three paranormal romances and are judging every YA book based upon that?

Read something other than paranormal romance if you hate it so much. -_-*
