Why are front wheel drive cars not suitable as police cars?

I have read a number of postings that indicate front wheel drive cars are not suitable as police cars. Why is that?

    It's difficult to get a robust engine and transmission in a front wheel drive. They're very hard on the cars.

    most front wheel drive vehicles used by police have odd handling characteristics at high speed.
