Which should I get... Wide angle or Macro lens?

My brother is turning the big 4 - 0 and I was going to get him a lens for his camera because he really loves taking picture. He takes pictures of EVERYTHING. From a million different pics of the sunset to a tiny little bug crawling on a leaf. He has a canon camera... I have to double check with our other sibling what kind, because he has the same one... I THINK it's a EOS 60D

Anyway. I want to get him a lens for the camera... but I don't know which would be better. A wide angle or a macro lens.

As photographers... if you had to choose your first lens, which one would you get? Wide angle or macro?

Update:

First... He has mentioned both in the past which is why this was even a consideration. I'm not stupid. secondly... you don't ask someone which one they want for their BIRTHDAY which is to be given at a SURPRISE party. Third, doesn't answer my question. I asked if YOU and to choose YOUR first lens, which would YOU Get. I'm looking for opinions, not unwanted lectures on how to buy gifts for my family.

Update 2:

OMG People, are you stupid? I didn't say he was a photographer, I said he has a camera. that doesn't make you a professional. He just likes to take pictures. It's a hobby. I never said he was a professional. he's a cop by profession.

He has NO lenses other than the one that is on his camera now. He has mentioned wanting a wide angle and a macro but not having the money to get either right now... So it's not like I was thinking of this as "Ooo this sounds like a good idea". I happen to know a little more about my family than you do.

And exactly HOW am I getting mad at good advice? I don't need people giving me advice about how to buy gifts for my family. the question was, which would you get first if it were you buying a lens? telling me I should tell my brother what I'm getting for him for his surprise birthday party is a moronic response and not even slightly helpful.

The first lens I got with my Canon dSLR was the 60mm f/2.8 macro lens. It is nice for two reasons, it is a decent macro lens, and it is useful for portraits. It is also 2.8 so it is more versatile.

That said, a better macro lens is the Canon 100mm f/2.8, because with his camera it can shoot even smaller objects, and you can also step back a little further and still shoot small shy critters that are tough to shoot with the 60mm.

The wide angle, especially a high quality zoom, is probably going to be the most useful though. I would get him this unless you don't mind dropping a ton of money:

If you have the coin, get his this one:

Why are you getting upset when people are giving you good advice??

It is pointless just going and buying equipment for a photographer without knowing what they want/need.

you could go and spend 1000 onn a macro lens which will be of no good whatsoever to them.

Asking what lens I would buy is pointless as well as I may want a 500mm telephoto but your brother might never use that.

    ASK him what he wants.

It's hard to give a surprise photography gift. You may get something expensive but he already has. If you can get him a gift certificate for a grand to one of the local photo supply shops in town then I guess that would be awesome.
