Is 5/16 captive bead ring a good size for a helix piercing?
I know that I need an 18g, but I'm not sure about the depth (I'm ordering online).

18g is kinda small for a helix piercing...was it pierced at that size? 5/16 might work for your anatomy, it might not. I'd go ask a piercer what diameter would work best.
