で or に? [Japanese help]?

Which is right?

人の中に人気がある。

人の中で人気がある。

Or is there another way to express this all together?

Thank you in advance.

Update:

Thanks for the answers. What I really want to express is "popular among people", not sure how "popular in people" makes any sense. Do you mean that if I want to use に、 I should use it for places? For example, 日本にAKB48は人気がある。

The reason for my で/に confusion is because I do know another expression to express the same thing is 人々に人気がある。 So I'm wondering if using の中 will change the particle.

If I'm forced to choose the right one, I'd choose the second one. But in fact, if you just want to say that someone is pupular among people, you just say "○○は人気がある", omitting the "人の中で" part. This sounds a lot more natural.

On the other hand, if you are to say sb is popular among, say, British people, it would be better for you to say "○○はイギリス人の中で人気がある".

And if you want to say "AKB48 is popular IN Japan", you might as well say "AKB48 は日本で人気がある".

First one is "Popular in the people"

second is "Popular among the people."

    Hope it helped!
