What triggers the automatic windscreen wipers on many modern cars to come on?

I guess it's likely to be something related to electrical currents, but is this right and how does it work?

    Rain sensors. The sensors beam an infrared light that bounces back to the sensor. When the windshield becomes wet, less light comes back triggering the wipers.
