What's the best time of the year to visit Detroit?

In terms of weather, probably May or September.

Detroit still has many attractions that have survived the imposition of socialist rule in the 1970s. You can also tour the many abandoned neighborhoods and hundreds of closed factories that are slowly disintegrating to see the results of socialist rule.

The winters can be brutally cold, but the rest of the year is okay.

The fall time is a great time to visit the Detroit area and if you visit in the fall, go visit a cider mill to try fresh apple cider and donuts.

I am originally from the Detroit area and for many years have watched a once vibrant, beautiful city become one, big ghetto as a result of "socialist rule", just as the first commenter (above) stated. Now, it's just a big zoo witha bunch of wild animals in control. In fact, the Detroit police chief (whom I think is a good man and happens to be black), James Craig said recently, "If you're traveling into the city you are taking your life in your hands. Oh, how he was attacked by all the liberal, left wing groups for that statement. The poor guy, he was just telling the truth. The city is very violent and dangerous. Drug houses, thugs, and general mayhem rule in Detroit. Beware. You're better off visiting the outer suburbs.

Fall. Cooler weather than summer, and great foliage displays.
