How do I talk to my parents about switching to virtual school?
Hi, I need some advice on how to talk to my parents and ask them if I can do virtual school this year. For the past 2-3 years, I've been attending public school in my county, and I do not enjoy it whatsoever. There is a TREMENDOUS amount of bullying and bad influences (vaping and drugs) that I don't like being around on a daily basis. I am constantly a target of bullying and no one sticks up for me or supports me. I do not fit in well at all, as we live in a country area and I enjoy city clothing styles and "city" music. I also have severe social anxiety, so starting new conversations and talking to new people is nerve-wracking for me. In addition, the COVID-19 pandemic has affected my school system for the worst. Everything is posted online and is extremely confusing and hard to follow. Rather than being able to work on my own pace, I am either having to slow down or speed up beyond my abilities. I have been extremely stressed out for these past couple of weeks and I have been emotionally hurt these past couple of years. I feel like virtual school is my only other option, and I don't mind doing it, either. Staying at home and not worrying about other people tormenting me or making me miserable everyday. How can I talk with my parents about possibly enrolling me in a virtual schooling system?

Just be honest say I am getting bullied non stop, I think I will do better attending online school. By the way I loved my cyber school, Im from PA. I was call PA cyber charter school out of Midland PA

Why not look into Monarch Home school? They have a 30 day free home school. Tell your parents about it and explain that you can try it for 30 days and they can see how you are doing and progressing. Maybe the reason why they may not want you to do it is because it may cost money. So let them look into this and give it a try.

You have ticked most of the Buzz-words: 'bad influences', drugs, bullying, 'work at my own pace' 'anxiety', stress. Remember to add ADHD or Autism if you can, your parents are unlikely to question your self-diagnosis.

If you're lucky enough to be in a school system that is actually open right now, go. There are loads of lonely kids right now who would love to be able to go to school. Everyone gets hurt in school- it's important to experience that to learn that the world doesn't end, so that you can withstand greater hurts later on. As for the work posted online, everyone is having a problem with that. Talk to your teacher about it- they understand that this is difficult.
BTW, most kids think they have "social anxiety". It's perfectly normal to have trouble starting conversation and speaking to new people. That's not what social anxiety is. And it's another thing that gets easier when you HAVE to do it. Staying by yourself will only make all of this worse, and cripple you for life.

You might want to start with doing some research on how virtual schools, like K12, for instance, are different than your school's current online curriculum. K12 is an online, public school option which means that curriculum is going to be very similar to brick and mortar schools---- there's some ability to work at your own pace however, there's still sort of a timeline and expectations that you will be attending online class sessions where you will be taught at the same pace as the teacher is moving through the curriculum. I say this as a parent who has been homeschooling my own child for the past several years with a K12 school... it has been more flexible than traditional schooling, but there are still things that are a challenge.
