Why doesn't "extraordinary" mean that you are especially normal?

    you have a point... being extraordinary literally should mean especially normal. but that would not actually mean anything at all because being normal on most people's context just mean plain normal. not especially normal or whatever... and the answer to your question would just be... just because...

    The thing is that when you think of extraordinary, the extra helps elevate the word make it seem like it has a higher rank. Especially normal to me seems like whatever is being described is better than normal, but it still is normal.

    Extra ordinary means above normal and at times it means you are better than good. So it cannot be used to refer to especially normal whaever that means

    Because you're thinking of extra as meaning something that is 'more than', whereas the Latin meaning of extra is 'ouside of'. Think of 'extra-terrestrial' as an example; literally 'outside the earth'..
