Painting with Acrylics?

I did my first acrylic painting on a canvas... it came out really nice, but my friend said i should always paint the sies too... (it's one of those traditional wood framed ones.)

I thought I could still have it framed with a fancy frame but she said this is the type that's ready to hang...

Do you paint all the sides and then hang it? or can you still frame a ready to hang canvas?

the canvas is like this>> http://barrattsofficepro.com/photos/custom/canvas....

Most artists buy the kind of canvas you used and paint the sides because that is the look they are going for and these are usually a bit more expensive than the traditional ones. There's is nothing wrong with framing the one you painted, but you will have to find or have a frame made that will accommodate it. To keep your material expenses down if you don't plan to paint the sides go with the traditional ones and stay away from the gallery wrap type canvas.

I normally mask the sides of my canvases with masking tape before I paint them. I gives a nice clean edge. Just lightly score the painted edge of the tape with a craft knife before you peel it off. That way you won't end up pulling off part of your painting. Acrylic, especially if it's layered pretty thick, will stretch and peel like crazy if you're not careful.

You can cut the canvas off the stretchers and hang it in a traditional picture frame. A UV-protective frame will keep the painting from fading in the light, too. You can also have a custom frame done for a stretched canvas, but it's pretty expensive. I always just put a couple of nails in the wall and hang mine on the stretchers. My art travels around with me a lot and I store it frequently, so glass frames or fancy custom jobs are pretty impractical for me.

    Good luck with your painting!

you can detach the canvas from the frame and frame the art

use the frame again just stretch new canvas over it

I wouldn't paint the sides if I hung it as is, or paint it, whatever

    it is your art
