2012 and the mayans...?

ok I've been doing research so I can get a friend to chillax about 2012. (she buys into it completely... even her husband can't talk her out of it.)

So I went to prove to her it's a bunch of bunk. I can't find ANYWHERE where the MAYANS predicted the end of the world.

I've found a bunch of schlubs who have claimed that's what they say, but I see no proof other than their own word (which is not exactly reliable.) they're the type of people who say "I predicted 9/11" AFTER it happened. well duh, so did I then.

some make up predictions that have supposedly come true (kind of how new quatrains from nostradamus constantly pop up to explain major events/disasters that nostradamus never actually wrote.)

anyhoo.

I decided to research further into these mysterious ancient mayans. If they predicted the end of the world down to the last second... they MUST have made other predictions that have come true.

I can't find a single thing attributed to ancient mayans except for 2012, and I can't find proof that they actually said anything about 2012 other than the calander ends (and probably rolls into the next one) in that year. Everything else is what OTHERS are saying they BELIEVE it means.

can anyone else give me actual examples, with actual documented evidence that the Mayans predicted 2012, or that they predicted anything at any time?

Update:

Tidus... I think she'll have a calendar to write on... our calendars technically end every December 31st at 11:59pm... but when it's midnight, surprisingly a new calendar begins.

I think that's what will happen with the Mayan calanders too.

Just like some one else on here said: The reason why you can't find much else than just mere interpretations of future events based on the Mayan calendar is because, when the spaniards when in to colonize them, most of their writings and places of worship had been pillaged and burned. So what we have today is but a mere glimpse of what all their knowledge was comprised of.

And because it's such an incomplete knowledge, people speculate in thousands of ways over it. No one truly knows if there were other calendars that left off from where 2012 left off, but they still ran with it just in case, it JUST MIGHT BE THE END OF THE WORLD.

People tend to have a visceral fascination/fear of the unknown, and the future because they view the world and everything in it as being finite(including their own lives).

The concept of mortality and finality can wreak havoc of someone's mind because it implies loss of control, powerlessness.

Your friend probably feels that if only she really truely knew what's coming up, at least that would somehow ease her fears.

But depending on what her faith is, I'd say may be she should consult a spiritual advisor, since she's basically in some kind of "spiritual rut" But again, I don't think you could ever really find any hard proofs of what you are looking for in whatever they have left of the Mayan culture.

But best of Luck to you and your friend. And if you're ever interested I could give you more info on how to consult an advisor.

no no no you have it all wrong, the mayans are not predicting the end of the world

the reason many people believe and say this is because the mayan calendar ends on december 12, 2012. In which at that time the earth will be center lined with our galaxy and supposedly will unleash evil spirits of wrath onto out world.

the mayan calendar is more accurate than our modern day, no joke. This civilization was very advanced in astronomy. But they make no prophecies of a dooms day ( this is called the Doomsday Prophecy).

I was waiting for this question. 2012, by the Mayans, is not Armageddon. It's the end of their calendar. They made the first calendar, so they started the record of time. 2012 is the end of the world AS WE KNOW IT. People thought technology was going to crash in 2YK, but it didn't. People are taking 2012, WAY out of proportion. Tell your friend that she has noting to worry about, except the fact that she won't have a calender to mark doctor appointments on.

Try the link above. It has some pretty useful info in it that your friend should read. I can't find any evidence of any Mayan predictions that came true either.

No one knows what 12/21/12 is going to be like. As far as that goes tell your friend not to forget Y2K. How many people went wacko over that?

Good luck on your research and I hope someone who actually has some useful info answers this for you. :-)

The Mayans just made a calendar that went to that date. They figured it was far enough ahead of their own time to serve their purposes adequately. And then if they did reach that date they could always create another calendar.

People are always makein up bullcrap about the world ending. But somehow every prediction hasn't come true. This one won't either.

The Mayan calendar is a 5200 year cycle. Just like any other calendar, it simply starts over. The world did not end 5200 years ago when it started over, and I doubt if it will end in 2012.
