Is the USMC's record really flawless?

My USMC buddies won't stop boasting about some "flawless record", and having to "always save the Army."

Military history buffs, or anyone who's been there: Any truth to this? Or are they just blowing more USMC PR smoke out their asses? Is there a record of Marines "doing poorly" as my buddies frequently accuse the Army of doing?

Please, only respond if you know what you're talking about.

their record is definately far from flawless.

in the civil war their commadant pretty much refused to send troops to fight on the land.

during ww2 their first "elite" unit (marine raiders) didnt really think a situation over and left some of their guys behind on an island...they got captured and beheaded.

lets also not forget how the army had more combat troops in the pacific (as well as fully handling europe on their own) theatre during WW2 than the marines did

they had their fair share of **** ups in korea and vietnam

someone brought up Falluja: what he didnt mention though was that the army took it and held it on its own (actually the 82nd airborne did) then when they handed it off to marines the marines lost it within the first month, launched an operation to retake the city on their own that completely failed, and had to call the army back to help retake the city. thats the last large case of one branch (army)saving anothers (marines) ***.

then theres MARSOC that got booted out of afghan for completely ******* up their mission. i havent seen any other report of a SOF getting the boot from a war zone.

speaking of MARSOC, the usmc is also the last branch to create a unit that fell within USSOCOMs regs and qualifying as "special operations"...even the air force had special operations troops more than 10 years before the marines did (not to rag on the air force, CAS is the ****.)

heres 3 things to remember about marines (and im trying not to bash here):

    1. they're still butt hurt that the largest amphibious invasion in US history was done by the army at normandy (amphibious invasion is the marines bread and butter); and im sure it sucks being a 03 series with a barebones m16 and looking over and seeing 11Bs mess around with their M4s with ACOGs, Surefires, and PAQ systems

    2. they are the MOST PR based branch out there. my buddy is a marine and his whole unit had to make facebook pages about their marine carreer, the army isnt that attention starved. you also dont see the army have its combat troops by having them stand infront of monuments in a dress uniform and a m14 with a shined bayonnette.

    3. that "first in tip of the spear" bs? that saying actually came about from doing humanitarian, not combat, missions.

next time a marine brings up their "flawless" record, ask them what happened with Operation Vigilant Resolve

Source(s): former 82nd airborne. i've worked with regular army leg infantry units and marines...aside from army leg infantry having better gear i've yet to notice any tactical, capability, or proffessional difference between the two

    Blow hard's and nothing special

In WW2 at Normandy not one member of the USMC landed on any beach only US soldiers

ANZIO Not one member of the USMC on the Beach and the invasion of Morocco again No USMC

why because the US army could the Job just as well and they did so who save who on D Day

the US army did not need saving

    Iraq the first in British

Afghanistan first in CIA and SASR In both these cases it was classified as Black ops because of the Need of Secrecy who was watching the Australians before the Strike on Afghanistan ????

Flawless up to what point? The USMC has definately experience its fair share of defeat in battles throughout its existence. It just recently broke the stalemate it had between the Taliban in Now Zad.

I can't think of any major battle in recent history that was purely USMC anyways. Even Fallujah had many Army infantry battalions and Air Force TACP's crawling all over that place.

Ask him about Kingfisher Battle near Con Thien, and the Battle of Dai Do for starters.

And why in Operation Phantom Fury the Marines requested Cav to clear the city.

They just try to make themselves seem like a big deal which they're not.

Flawless record? MARSOC's performance in Afghanistan got them thrown out of the country for almost two years because they had the wrong approach. An entire squad of Marine Snipers were killed in Iraq because it is suspected they fell asleep in their OP and allowed insurgents to gain access to the roof top they were on. The Marines told Army units they were taking a too harsh of an approach in securing Fallujah and that when they took control of the city they were going to try a softer approach. It only took a few days for insurgents to seize that opportunity and the rest is well known history.

All service have flawed performances though.

The SEAL's poor planning and execution of a rescue mission to save a recon team (who also made poor decisions) lead to the worst loss of life in a single battle in the history of Special Operations (and also resulted in a Medal of Honor and 3 Navy Crosses).

The Air Force killed more Special Forces soldiers in the early days of the war in Afghanistan than the Taliban did.

Senior Army planners chose to bypass major weapons depots during the rush for Baghdad. Huge quantities of explosives and weapons were initially obtained by insurgents from these depots until they were secured weeks later.

Everyone has their dirty laundry and nobody is flawless.

Your husband needs to stop whining and suck it up. Crappy duty is area of life interior the militia and all of us receives it a minimum of once. Recruiting isn't a BS pastime, it in simple terms isn't a glamorous one or a grateful one. in the journey that your husband is fairly almost as good as you're saying he's, then he should be proud to have the challenge of having different good men & women human beings to take their position in our Corps. actual Marine Corps?? each and every thing interior the Marine Corps is actual. no individual is taking area in round or pretending. definite, they instructed him to be a recruiter. that is what occurs. You get orders and also you retain on with them. Jesus, i'd provide my left nut to be able to re-enlist and fairly I even could take heed to three ungrateful little punk. secure pay, all medical costs paid for, the delight of belonging to the Marine Corps; i might want to pass on and on.

not in mililitary but from what I heard, you guys all just hate on each other it's a triangle between navy marines and army I think airforce is left out though.

From what I heard from some of my friends. If you were in the Navy, your frineds would go: "You guys are a bunch of pansies. We put our *** on the line and you guys just drive us there." etc..................

We DID lose the Vietnam war though......
