Leaving a single lit candle in the window - Religious or just something out of a movie?

Someone older I know told me how they lost a girlfriend/wife/god knows who/how.

They said they found them years later, and that he always left a lit candle in the window so she could find her way room.

This reeks of religious, holioday, movie-esh stuff. Where does this practice originate from (World War II)?

it's just a personal, spiritual (like someone else said) thing that people can do. it has been practiced by people of all faiths. i read a book that was set in ancient Ireland, and a girl in it lit a candle (homemade ^^) and placed it in her window at night to burn because her lover was far away and he was also afraid of the dark.

I'd say this practice has, in some form or another, been around for much of time. Since Protestant England, Pagan Europe, and who knows how many other religions had practices similar to this (you're right, it is very popular in wartime, but not just WWI) I suppose you could say it's so religious, it's secular-it doesn't truly belong to one religion anymore.

It should be out of a movie cause candles are romantic to leave out in the window.
