  • Best Bang For My Buck On A Used Toyota Hybrid?

My top priority is a car good on gas.

I think it goes without saying that Toyota invented the book on it.

Which year is best? Obviously the less miles the better, one owner. I am not a huge fan of some of the newer models that are smaller and get worse (40 mpg average) than some of the older models.

I live and work in North Florida around the Big Bend and would plan on using this car mainly for work, fun, and trips.

Is there a particular year or model I should be looking at?

  • Upgrade computer now or wait to buy a new one?

The computer is fairly old; it has a single-core processor and a 8x AGP graphics card slot.

I would like to be able to multitask more and be able to play newer video games on it. This is not absolutely necessary but would be nice. I upgraded the ram six months ago. The only thing left to upgrade is the graphics card; I would just buy a new computer before upgrading the motherboard and CPU.

Anyways, here are my computers specs:

    AMD 2400+ processor (2.01 ghz)

    3 GB PC-3200 Corsair RAM

    120gb 7200rpm Western Digital hard-drive

    128mb 8x AGP Geforce TI-4800

    GA-7VAXP motherboard

I cannot use PCI-express cards, I am currently running Windows XP Professional SP3, but I am going to be switching to Windows 7. In my computers current state it would be unable to use Windows Aero but can run Windows 7 no problem. Any suggestions?

I have a laptop with a duo core processor but a garbage built in windows graphics cards. The screen is broken..though I could plug it into my monitor and it would work no problem. Can I upgrade the graphics card on the laptop? I assume the newer laptops can have their graphics cards upgraded, but not the older ones?

    Thanks for help.

  • Virgin Mobile, T-Mobile or AT&T (Service) + What Phone?

Short phone history, I started with Sprint but had problems getting calls to and from my house, switched to Verizon, which was generally great, but did a family plan and was left footing the bill (which I paid, but they wanted me to make a deposit), so I switched to Boost Mobile.

Eventually I went to Virgin Mobile. I had a much nicer phone with Boost Mobile, but was very dissatisfied with the service (and their web services offer at the time was a blatant lie).

I pay $30-33 a month including tax with Virgin Mobile and I use a LG Flare. Their customer service is slightly worse than Boost Mobile's and the web barely works.

I am a student on a limited income; right now with my part-time job (Winn-Dixie) I get 17% off AT&T monthly plans and no activation fees (I think this is standard practice with no customers). I am in the process of getting back my job with the Medical College here, so technically I would also qualify for any potential discounts for Florida State employees through a technicality.

So there are a few things, which company offers superior service/price: T-Mobile, Virgin Mobile or Boost Mobile? Most plans cost $30-60 a month.

Is going with AT&T worth it? As I have learned you make a down payment on a phone and then pay $15/month until the phone is paid off. Seems pretty insane to pay $400-500 for a phone..but being able to stream videos is nice and then paying $80-110 a month on top of that. I do get 17% off, so the bill would not be as bad as some others get. I was told by an AT&T rep that the maximum discount is 22% off (for Burger King employees).

This phone/plan would be for personal use.

Remaining question would be which phones to consider.

Virgin Mobile: LG Optimus V or Motorola Triumph

T-Mobile: No idea, I have some variation of an Android Galaxy

AT&T: iphone 3, iphone 4, Google Phone, Android, no idea

  • Leaving a single lit candle in the window - Religious or just something out of a movie?

Someone older I know told me how they lost a girlfriend/wife/god knows who/how.

They said they found them years later, and that he always left a lit candle in the window so she could find her way room.

This reeks of religious, holioday, movie-esh stuff. Where does this practice originate from (World War II)?

  • Upgrading RAM On Inspirion 531S (Dell)?

This is for a friend, I recently did it for my PC.

    Here's a helpful website: http://www.memorystock.com/memory/DellInspiron531....

It says her computer can only take

    1024MB-667MHz DDR2-667 PC2-5300, 240p DIMM, 1.8v

    1024MB-800MHz DDR2-800 PC2-6400, 240p DIMM, 1.8v

Seems to me that her computer should be able to take a lot more RAM. I looked up the info on system, and it said she has 960 MB of ram (of the 1024 MB), which seems rather low to me..

The info on her RAM is Samsung 1 GB 1 Rx8 PC2-6400U-666-12-ZZ & M3778T2863EHS-CF7 0928, so it's 1 GB of PC-6400. Seems decent, I think I should just upgrade the total memory to 2 GB.

Computer is currently running Windows XP Home 32-bit, so the most it could use/detect is 3-3.25 GB. The price of this RAM is pretty cheap, depending on the price I end up paying (more than likely I would buy something through eBay), I could probably get 1-2 additional GBs for $15-35.

The computer is decent, she doesn't use it to run any major programs, but says she was interesting in watching videos (I just recently got her sound to work), and I'm running Opera (5 total tabs), Windows Media Player (Audio CD), and Windows Task Manager. AVG Antivirus, Brother Printer, Soundman, NVidia drivers also in the background. None of that would probably change; with all of that her computer is using 599MB, and the CPU is at 4% (with 8% max peaks).

    So, here are the questions:

    1. Should I keep the memory currently in there?

    2. Upgrade to 2 or 3 GBs?

    3. Sell the old memory, and upgrade to a higher bus rate (800 instead of 667)?

    4. Brand name memory (Corsair - Value Select) or Generic (Samsung)?

I don't think I have ever seen RAM die in a computer..did when I brought the ram for my PC, I made sure to buy Corsair since if it dies, Corsair will just automatically replace it.

    Thanks!

  • Which 8x AGP Graphics Cards Have and Support HDMI?

I think the question is pretty straightforward.

I have a GA-7VAXP motherboard, currently a 128MB Geforce4 TI-4800. It supports a basic VGA/SVGA cable. Do such 8x AGP cards exist that support HDMI?

  • Should I Upgrade From 32 to 64-bit OS? (Also are there risks with using 37" 1080p TV for monitor).?

First off, the TV is used for regular & HD cable TV watching though I have not got the box yet.

I was using an old 17" CRT monitor which was clearly about to die.

Are there any risk with getting a burned in image on the TV? Are there any risks to the TV? I made sure to skim the manual, which stated to only use 1024x768 (My current graphics card supports 1280x1024). Also, I am stretching out the image.

Currently I am using a VGA/SVGA video cable, I am returning audio cables simply b/c they sold me the wrong ones (works for ipods, but also xb360/ps3 I assume).

I was considering upgrading the graphics card so I can use HDMI cables, the question is will I see a difference?

Now the particulars, here is my custom system:

    GA-7VAXP motherboard

Currently running Win XP Professional SP3

2400+ XP AMD (did searching, it's a Thunderbird, x86 processor; very old I know)

Had 2x256MB PC2100 & PC2700 ram (Generic sticks of RAM)

(I have since upgraded to 3x1GB PC3200 Corsair, currently waiting on the last two, but I am running it at 1.5 GBs, obviously at the PC2100 rate)

120 GB IDE 7200 rpm HD

Geforce 4 TI-4800 SE Graphics card (which has the VGA slot, a similar looking white slot, and a middle circular slot)

Onboard sound/lan though I never got the onboard lan to work.

I have no driver CDs (not that it would help since I built this originally in 2002/03). When I installed Windows XP, it was able to detect all drivers, which kind of shocked me. Since, I have only upgraded the codex for video, windows media player works fine, but VLC player does not.

Based on what I have looked up on my motherboard, the maximum upgradeable ram is 3x1GB, which I have already taken care of. I was considering getting a newer graphics card that can support HDMI; the only issue is I need older graphics cards, older = 8x AGP.

I am not interested in getting a new PC, this one works fine, and is mainly my work computer. I will be getting a quad-core PC early next year, so please don't suggest I should simply get a new computer. I was having problems with random freezing when I left the computer alone, but I am pretty sure that issue is 99% resolved with the ram upgrade.

Look forward to any potential feedback, I can probably even help you if you have any questions. Thanks for any potential help, my main concerns are if doing this will hurt my new TV and if there is any purpose in upgrading the OS to 64-bit (it seems there is no advancement).

I am also upgrading my old laptop, and doing the 62-bit upgrade which allow it to support/see 2x2GB DDR2 ram instead of 3-3.5GB. The laptop is a Toshiba Satellite A105-S4084. Everything is standard and unmodified from the original purchase. I'm really open to any and all ideas..

  • Toys for Cat When I Am Not Home?

When I say toys, I mean anything.

She's 9-10 years old, tabby, no major problems.

Just won some plague buildup removing from his teeth, she had hair problems (pretty sure stress induced), but she seems really great.

The main thing is she gets bored/lonely when I am not home. I have gotten her toys before, I know she likes catnip, does not like catnip balls, likes fluffy mouse toys (with and without catnip).

Catnip seems to be a common theme with toys, I am looking for any and all suggestions. Probably going to try a pet store b/c the selection at Publix/Walmart is nonexistent.

Not sure how much you can tell from the way a cat acts, but she loves people, and generally dislikes other animals though she has got along with animals in the past (the less the better).

I just moved into a new house, there are no other animals, and I doubt there will be any added. I keep her in my room (which is quite large compared to prior rooms) and I let her run around the house (which is the biggest she has ever been in), but I don't let her go anywhere she wants, and I don't let her into other peoples rooms or bathrooms.

Final note: She is not declawed, I'd like to get a scratch post, but don't believe in spending $75-200 for a 4x0.5 cylindrical carpet. That and I don't know if she will even use it.

  • Just Started Insanity - Knee Pain?

Am 24 years old, 5'10" male, currently weigh 219

A year and a half ago, I weigh 180. Five years ago, I was at approximately 200 pounds, so although I weigh more right now, my body shouldn't be completely unused to carrying extra weight.

I did the fit test, my knees hurt instantly after 1.5 minutes.

I did some reading and found out that I should be jumping/landing on my toes, I did this and noticed less pain. I am using New Balance 407 shoes that are probably a year old, I would be lead to believe that if I replace the shoes (running shoes instead of walking shoes + new shoes = 99% pain reduction).

Or maybe I should lose 10-20 pounds before I begin something like insanity. I am only 24, I have worked out before quite intensely, I don't know why this is suddenly such a problem. Any advice?

  • How Do You Split Credit Card Tips?

Keep in mind this is a job that traditionally does not pay less than minimum wage, however, thanks to the great guy who owns it we are paid $5.00/hour.

So my question is I got a credit card receipt for a HUGE order (over $500), biggest single order that I have ever seen (we sell pizzas).

I had someone help me take the order and the customer paid with a credit card, so even though I split the tip I received ($94), up-front I was told when I came back that there was no way to split credit card receipts. So I had to claim $94, while the other guy didn't have to claim a single thing.

The funny thing is, it seems to me that the company I work for wants it both ways. How do restaurants, that traditionally employ people largely to earn tips work this out? Preferably I could get an answer from someone who has to tip the cooks 10%, the buser 10%, et cetera.

I am sure there has to be a way to do it..I actually intend on paying my taxes appropriately, and have no intention of paying taxes on half a tip someone else earned. Thanks!

  • Should I Allow My 9/14-Year Old Cat To Be Put Under Anesthesia?

She has/had infected gums caused by tartar buildup in her teeth. I have been giving her antibiotics for about 1.5 months; first I gave her Clavamox, and then Amoxidrop. She seems to be doing a lot better now, she is more expressive towards me. Also, she NEVER had any problems eating.

I am pretty sure the infection is virtually gone, however, the tartar remains, so any changes would be temporary (based on what the vet told me). One of her front canine teeth are also loose, which was where the infection was.

The vet also stated my cat has a heart murmur caused by the infection that was caused by the tartar. She seems perfectly normal, he recommended I have her teeth cleaned after the antibiotics were administered (he only wanted me to give her clavamox). He also seemed very gun-ho on getting her under anesthesia and removing the tooth, which to me seemed absolutely unnecessary.

I was starting to get under the impression I should take her to another vet to a) get a second opinion, and b) get a second opinion.

The vet had concerns about her low weight (9.5 lbs) and the risk of not being able to come back from anesthesia, and I have been doing my best to feed her more often.

Any advise on how to deal with this?

  • Neuroscience + Biomedical Engineering In Relation to Future Cyberneutics / Terminators?

This is a project for a junior college level course. Problem is I am having a damn hard time trying to find material (I have been focusing online), but will visit my library after tax day.

The original project idea I submitted was not so 'futuristic,' a man with Lou Gehrig's disease (ie: Stephen Hawking) is able to move a robotic arm via a chip implant in his brain.

Focus of the project will/has to be on the applications of a biomedical engineering process on the nervous system. I would also consider having a portion on eye implants. Basically take the Terminator 3-D ride introduction at Universal Studios (Magic Johnson shoots a perfect 3-pointer with the help of his red-eye lenses).

I love this topic/area of future research, plan on trying to go into it if and when I go to graduate school and if I end up working for the US military. Any help for giving some excellent sources for this project would be amazing (ie: excellent = not wikipedia).

    Thanks for the help.

  • Benefits of Fish Oil and Flax Seed Oil following workouts and in general.?

Currently I just started taking fish oil. I was under the impression and recall studies (article in Men's Health) that fish oil is good for your brain, blood vessels, removing free radicals, and reducing muscle soreness. Focus on this would be muscle soreness and cardiovascular improvements.

I am highly leaning towards also incorporating flax seed oil into my diet.

Currently I take fish oil in the mornings, before bed, and after workouts.

Someone with a background in nutrition suggested I take both at the same time. If also states fish oil is better for cardiovascular health whereas flax seed oil is better for reducing muscle soreness.

I was curious what some of the nutritionally minded individuals in here thought of this.

My goals are to cut fat, increase/maintain strength, and improve cardiovascular health.

  • Is it really that bad to drink a bed with my last meal?

I do three days of cardio a week (wind sprints, I burn roughly 300-400 calories).

I do three days of weight-lifting.

    I eat very well.

My last meal is typically a chicken breast, half a tin of vegetables, a handful of peanuts, and a beer.

If my goal is to get to 8% body fat, would the beer be that bad with this particular goal in mind?
