My car is making a whining sound when I first start it up. What's happening?

It lasts a few minutes and stops, but its getting louder and longer. I'm not having problems with it - just the sound when I start it in the morning.

Update:

It is a Chevy Impala. It's not a screech - but a whine. It goes on no matter what gear the car is in or if I am parked with the engine running. It goes away after a couple of minutes.........

Thanks so much for answering!

Update 2:

It happens first thing in the morning - but may happen again if I don't drive it again all day.

Ok, so what kind of car are we talking about? Sounds are the worst to diagnose because whining to you might mean squealing to me.

Does it happen while in park, driving, under 5mph? does it do it every time the car starts or is it first thing in the morning?

I'm almost wanting to throw a guess out there and say its your clutch fan, but without knowing your car info it might not pertain. (you might have electric fan, not clutch type...)
