Please also explain the use of により here, that's the part that stumps me the most.

The reason people ask for help for translation here is because google translate comes up with crap and cannot explain grammar used like により.

It's easier if you start from the back:
The explanation (解釈) is that (という) there is a fear (おそれがある) that the pregnant mother's health will be greatly affected (母体の健康を著しく害する) due to (により) physical or economic reasons (身体的または経済的理由)
and - or possibly "but", depending on context (が)
this trend is generally followed / This is generally accepted as a trend. (一般的傾向として認められる). (it looks like that "みと" in the second part might be a typo?)
