What is ankle support and why do certain people need to wear those bandages or braces for them?

Update:

I am not familiar with physiotherapy or anything about the human body, but I have heard both of footwear that claims to improve ankle support, as well as things like bandages and braces or support when injured. The latter is obvious if your ankle was sprained or whatever, but what about footwear? I even hear certain types of pants can provide ankle support.

for impactive sports i.e. running, netball etc. I have to wear a lace up rigid splint on my right ankle. I'm 20 and I've had to wear this since the age of 12.

As a child I did a variety of sports which caused my ankle joint to deteriorate; e.g. at the age of 11 I was ice skating, fell badly on my ankle and I was on crutches for 2 months with severe tissue damage. After that, I continued to play netball which puts a lot of strain on your ankles. I could feel my ankle getting weaker and weaker as I kept 'going over on it' as we called it.

Wearing my splint when I do exercises, restricts my ankle movements slightly so that I cant do any further damage to it,

    hope this helped
